  • Summary: These are troubling times, Your Grace. The petitioners’ petty matters exceed our limited resources, to say nothing of the war. A careful balance must be struck. Your throne awaits.

Yes, Your Grace is a fascinating game with heart. Its short length might turn away some players, but it will be perfect for anyone who loves regret filled choices or was burned badly by the Game of Thrones finale last year. If you like your games with emotional variety and anxiety, you’ll enjoy your brief time with Yes, Your Grace.

Despite the negative aspects described, there is something genuinely fun about playing Yes, Your Grace. It’s perfect for some casual, beer and pretzels gaming. But you are playing for the narrative not the gameplay mechanics. You will get at least two playthroughs out of the game, which amounts to approximately 10 to 20 hours of gameplay (the playtime on various Steam reviews seems to confirm this). If this was in a Humble Bundle or on sale, I would think you would be happy with your purchase. At full price, I would probably feel as though I could have spent my money on something better. With that said, the game feels like a labour of love, not some lazy cash grab. Just don’t expect particularly deep gameplay.

Despite its flaws Yes, Your Grace is still an interesting game with a strong enough core concept. Those after a clean-cut kingdom simulator will come away uncomfortable with their lack of control, but that's really the point; Yes, Your Grace is about how even leadership has its limits, and all we can do is try to do the right thing where we can.

Being a king is not easy, and so proves Yes Your Grace and its refreshing resources management system. However, its story lacks some originality.

Yes, Your Grace is a monarch simulator that’s better at depicting interpersonal relationships than actual reigning. Its nicely crafted story fortunately trumps the occasional frustration stemming from a management system based on chance.

Yes, Your Grace’s clean presentation and likable plot elements do a lot to win over the player, but it’s not enough to stomach the bad taste left by vague objectives and arbitrary fail states.

"Yes, your grace" wants to simulate your life as the ruler of a fantasy realm. It comes with a decent presentation and a slightly cumbersome"Yes, your grace" wants to simulate your life as the ruler of a fantasy realm. It comes with a decent presentation and a slightly cumbersome control scheme, some light resource management and daily duties in form of a growing line of peasants and nobles with requests for said resources for different reasons. Granting or denying those requests results in somewhat predictable consequences, and the main difficulty is guessing how important the request is. Guessing, as opposed to planning or thinking, because you don't know what else is waiting for you that day.

It won't take you too long to figure out that requests mostly come in pairs, and you have to get lucky guessing if the one still waiting in line is more important. At the end of the day you might also need money or food to repair and upgrade your kingdom, so while it's already difficult to leave everyone happy, you have to save some of your riches for long-term investments.

On top of that you take over at a time where your king has already been at it for more than a decade, and you will have to deal with the really bad decisions he made long before you took over.

If you are interested in the kingdom management part, you might be a little underwhelmed, and you don't really get to see any of the growth you managed or the riches you accumulate or the stuff that you build except in a very basic daily overview.

While all of this already presents a challenge, one of your regent's really bad ideas was having three children, and not having staff to raise and entertain them. That's what you are going to do during the second half of every day, and you should really enjoy soap-style whining and drama to get through that (there's also a wife). And for some reason you can't go all medieval on them and tell them that heads are going to roll if they don't behave, so you are going to moderate and soothe and negotiate and find yourself once more guessing what the outcome of whatever you choose may be. I desperately tried to get rid of all of them, but this part of the kingdom management comes with a lot of video game logic. You already lack actual control, and even if you think you made a clear decision it can easily result in the opposite.

So if you buy this for some sims-style life-management, you might find yourself underwhelmed yet again.

The experience as a whole is a little too much gambling and not enough gaming. While the writing itself is ok and the plot passable, it was all a little too random for my taste, and it's too obviously set up to make you fail. Even if you don't, there is no real sense of accomplishment. It's still entertaining enough, but there are better alternatives out there.
