All in all, Infinite: Beyond the Soul mimics old action games unexpectedly well, but often with smarter gameplay. Too many games these days are about pressing left, square, right, circle, up, X, down, left bumper, right bumper, both triggers down and a Buddha prayer on top to make things happen. That’s why a game like Infinite: Beyond the Mind is more than called for; it’s a blessed throwback to simpler times and games.
Boasting bitcrushed soundbites and bitpop
beats by Defense Mechanism, it sounds the
part. As for looks, the sprite work has the
bobble-headed charm of chibi art styles.
The vehicle aesthetic is more realistic but
they still look like they’re straight out of
the doll’s house. The art direction feels far
more confident rendering nuts and bolts
rather than our protagonists, but the pixel
art is nothing to sniff at. There is a clear
understanding that bosses are sold not only
through their challenge but also via visual
spectacle. They’re still diminutive but not to
be trifled with, bringing the pain
with screen-sweeping attacks in
standout arenas. The Beljantaur
Kingdom can take us on again

Infinite would be an easy [70]…if parts of its platforming engine, parts that are mandatory to complete the game, didn’t rely on a coin-flip to determine whether they would actually work or not. With important functions being so obviously broken, I can’t in good faith give out anything more than a middling score.
