The return of a classic game that used to "eat" our coins like crazy back in the late 80's. This new edition of Toki retains all the charm of the original as well as its difficulty. The new art makes it fresh and playable again, but the lack of any kind of extra content left us wanting more.
A fresh coat of paint and a new look for the crazy chimp don’t do enough to escape the aged level design and frustrating trial-and-error gameplay loop.
Better than the original ?
May be less difficult if you play as a novice but still thrilling.. Graphics are terrific and the music is just perfect !
I love the collector version and the cabinet is a great idea !
TOKI remake is a game that you love, or hate. Like the original.
The1989's game had its problems: a general slowness in the movements of the ape, with a difficulty not-so-well balanced. The Microids release shows love to the original, preserving merits and defects. The new visuals are excellent, you feel to "play a cartoon". It's simple: If you loved the old TOKI, probably you'll love the new TOKI. For me, it deserves an "8/10".
P.S. I bought the (Retro)Collector Edition, easily one of the best collections seen around. Stickers, comic, small wooden case, and the game cartridge, for 40,00€ circa. That's a great value.
The digital delivery version ISN'T so great, so... I advise you to put money on retail.
If you enjoy the old-school nature of Toki and are willing to explore every nook and cranny, then this is a remake very much worth your time. It’s not a long playthrough in one go at less than an hour, but it will take you more than that to master. Give this monkey a spitting chance.
A beautiful remaster of the original Toki, with the same great elements and flaws of the 1989 arcade. Short, difficult and fun. We love the retro-collector edition, which includes a wooden cabinet replica.
Toki is an absolutely beautiful remaster, with fantastic hand-drawn backgrounds, brilliant character animation and impressive boss designs. Aesthetics only go so far, though, and while the game itself is fun to play (if a little cheap with its deaths at times) the reality is it’s an arcade game at heart. As such, its six stages won’t last you too long, especially if you’re the target audience – someone who remembers Toki back in the day and has continued to play platformers for the three decades that followed – and once it’s done there’s no real replay value.
The retro appeal is lost, the mechanics aren’t updated for modern times, and it offers nothing of historical or archival value. Frankly, I have no idea who Toki’s intended audience is – someone obviously loved it enough to dig it up and give it a fresh coat of paint, I’m just not sure why.
It's a short arcade game with stunning HD visuals and presentation. Sadly there's no additional content (extras, save states, original graphics option, etc) for this remaster, but only the arcade experience in different difficulty levels.
It's a nice game you'll love if you liked the original and the amazing physical edition with a wooden arcade cabinet for the switch is certainly a welcome addition.
Sure, the hand drawn graphics look nice and the music is pleasant. The controls are tight enough too, but the level design and boss fights have not aged well at all here and you will also suffer a number of very cheap and frustrating deaths. I've finished this game twice now and I'm never likely to play it again. I kind of enjoyed my little nostalgic revisit of modernised Toki, but it was a pretty short trip at only about 20-30 minutes each play through. It is a shame the original arcade version was not included as part of the package.
Great improvement since 1989, but I feel it a little off, as console game is easier, a thing I feel correct because the original game was pretty difficult for me, I don't like too much the graphics, they are animated at a low frame rate, and they want to be too much humorous, original game wasn't so humorous. The music is a little simple.
I even regret that 0,87 € I spend on it. It's too punishing. You will lose all progress when you run out of lifes. Yet the game itself isn't joy-able enough to grind. It doesn't tell you what the different difficulty setups do (you start with less lives: 9 on easy, 2 on most difficult). The only upsides are, decent controls, nice sound-effects and "likable" visuals, even tho I think the "hero" looks unnecessarily derpy. The music is borderline okay, I guess. There are so much more enjoyable games ou there, don't waste your time on it. Can't recommend it.
SummaryToki sets off on a new adventure! The cult action/platform game originally released on arcade machines in 1989 is back with a super-simian new version, featuring all-new hand-drawn graphics and re-orchestrated music. Toki the warrior lived peacefully in the jungle with his sweetheart Miho. Appearing out of nowhere, the terrifying voodoo ...
