There are many hours of play in Sonic Superstars and whether you play mostly single-player like me, or co-op, there is fun for every Sonic fan and I feel the fans will be happy with this one. Even with Super Mario Bros. Wonder around the corner it’s going to be a great gaming holiday season for platformer fans. Sonic Superstars comes highly recommended.
Sonic Superstars is not only one of the greatest tributes to the more classic side of the blue hedgehog, but a game with a character and personality all of its own. A title that feels familiar from the first moment, but that will surprise us as we progress. SEGA proves that there is life for classic Sonic beyond the pixel art style.
Sonic Superstars is a good classic 2D Sonic game that shines especially in its visuals. Stages have a wider array of gimmicks when compared to older 2D Sonic games and boss fights are much more complex. However, the game design can feel unpolished and often doesn’t do a good job in communicating with the player. While the addition of local co-op sounds great on paper, Sonic’s speedy gameplay proves to be a difficult match for it.
Sonic Superstars shines brightest when it’s sticking to what made the Genesis titles so successful. Running through the levels, launching oneself off spring boards and dashing through loop the loops is just as enjoyable now as it was in the 16-bit days. Cracks in this Chaos Emerald become more apparent with some of the changes. Many of the boss designs are good, but the patterned approach to fighting them can make them excessively drag on. The powers granted by Chaos Emeralds are fun additions, but the overall emphasis on exploration over speed takes away from the core experience of what one expects and loves from a Sonic game, plus the addition of multiplayer is a reminder of why these have traditionally been single player experiences. But criticisms aside it’s still a fun game, and while far from flawless, still a must play for fans of classic Sonic games.
Sonic Superstars embodies the classic 2D Sonic game qualities, which is a commendable feature as it ensures an enjoyable gaming experience. However, this also serves as a point of critique, given the series' frequent reliance on nostalgia in past iterations.
Sonic Superstars started so well and with such potential but quickly fell off a cliff due to its irritating Zone design, forgettable soundtrack and odd aesthetic choices.
Solid 2D Sonic with vibrant, smooth visuals and sharp, kinetic gameplay on the PS5. Level design is also varied with the retro-themed being a particular highlight. It's a much better game overall than the Sonic 4 episodes on the PS3. The soundtrack however is just okay and for that reason I have to deduct a point.
Scum of the Year.
After buying this game for a second time I can proudly say that this game deserved this award more than any other game this year. But why? This game has some very positive reception so far from fans right? Well those reviews come from people who haven’t seen the inside of this game. On the outside you have 5 pretty good zones. The music is poppin, the level design is beautiful, and you’re just having a great time. But what about the other 6 zones? The game is unfinished. The music in these acts, it sounds like pissing on the side of a toilet seat. The stage design? Infuriating and unforgiving. And the worst part, there is barely any fun to be had here. And this is just the stages I’m just getting started. Next up are the characters. I honestly thing they nailed every character in the game, they all feel great to play and all fit every stage they play. (not the last stages though) Everyone except knuckles. Knuckles has been begging for a move redesign because his movement is slower than what it needs to be. He also goes along with the animation in the game, most of the animations are great, except for knuckles and all the bosses. 60$ for an unfinished game is crazy. SEGA, stop milking your fans and stop with the **** denuvo stuff.
I was an idiot for submitting my original score so early. This game is a chore by comparison to every other Sonic game. Its an over engineered mess. Everything takes far too long. The levels never stop. The boss fights are not built for this sonic who sits and drops speed as soon as you look at him. Every time you get hit your rings go flying. The constantly progressing screens (in the act 9 boss in particular, thank you whatever **** made that one) make 1 keeping what little speed you can get up constant nearly impossible, and 2 if you take a hit while constantly decelerating you're not getting any rings back. Starts out amazing but often turns into a bullet hell mess of a Sonic game.
And the 2 stage final boss fight is an absolute cluster **** which needs a checkpoint after the first stage, but has none, because all the agrivating misteps of movement compund in that fight.
