The amount of strategy required to play this game is impressive, if not intimidating. It will take some time to understand the mechanics of the game, but once you do, you’ll likely find the gameplay strangely addictive.
The game at the core of Capsule Monster Coliseum actually borders on engaging, and as such comes incredibly close to being worth playing for those who aren’t fans of the series. But close, as they say, only counts for horseshoes and hand grenades: not PS2 games.

Jogo incrível, só faltou uma continuação e IA em varias dificuldades, Como primeiro game no estilo eles fizeram muito bem, queria uma continuação, mas creio que o jogo morreu

At least mildly accessible and appealing even for entry-level fans. [Jan 2005, p.72]
As a turn based battle game however, it’s not very good. You are given a small amount of creatures, a single strategy that will win almost every time, and lackadaisical enemy AI.
There is some decent music and graphics that don't make me want to die. I guess that's the highest recommendation I can offer on this one. [Jan 2005, p.125]
Just because this is an original concept, doesn’t mean that it is any fun. In fact, I prefer the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game to this monster chess game.
Somewhere there is an audience for the kind of soul-crushing ennui that Capsule Monster Coliseum drapes around you like a ravenous anaconda…made of ennui.
Beneath the wave of nostalgia I've replayed this game recently to see my opinions of it, and the game holds up well. Game plays well, the AI is relatively good (I've found that a few enemies have set strategies that are pretty predictable, but that's really no different from facing a normal human so it passes), the music holds up fairly well, all I can minimum for a game is to have a good soundtrack. It's chess, but Yu-Gi-Oh Chess with stuff like leveling up, type matchups, and evolution. If you're a Yu-Gi-Oh fan, it holds up very well, so give it a try if you can snatch a copy nowadays!

A mecânica é ótima, trás inúmeras possibilidades. Talvez o maior problema seja o pouco que podemos explorar das criaturas aumentando de nível, evoluindo. O jogo é rápido para concluir, mas muito lento para iniciar as cenas de batalhas entre as criaturas. Como hoje (2020) está tudo mais veloz, darei uma nota que acho compreensivo se eu jogasse na época. Outro motivo é porque não exploraram mais sequências desse jogo divertido.
