MSOct 29, 2004The reviews are on target: repeated listenings reveal a truly beautiful album; sublime, joyful, sad, engaging, what fans of singer-songwriters yearn for...

ChristopherCMay 15, 2004A gorgeous release with songs that yearn to be listened to over and over again. This is Sam at her best!

ikerJun 10, 2004As much as I would like to see Sam let go and rock, the minimalism suits her well too.

PeeweeApr 18, 2005A masterpiece. One of the most underrated artists in American music, and this is her best album. Probably my favourite album of 2004.

JimBJun 16, 2004While I slightly prefer the darker tones on her previous masterpiece:"Fan Dance",Sam's new album is sublime regardless-"Reflecting Light" is simply one of the most beautiful songs she's ever written. I thank the stars there's an artist like Sam Phillips today still writing consistently brilliant material, having been in the(currently suffering)music-industry for as long as she has.

DavidK.Jun 17, 2004Here's a musician that continues to mature and deepen in a way that beckons the listener to do the same. A golden-set gem within pop music today. Almost freakishly perfect.

With deft, powerful strokes, the singer-songwriter chisels emotions, impressions, yearnings and regrets, giving these 13 songs exactly as much room as they need and no more.
-
A disc of graceful beauty.

What sounded austere on Fan Dance sounds simple on A Boot and a Shoe, and it's the differing inferences of those two adjectives that makes all the difference.
