A combination of versatility (Lucas is both singer and multiinstrumentalist) and judicious use of the recording studio makes Vanishing Twin’s fourth artist album devoid of voids. It’s perhaps their best release to date. [Dec 2023, p.52]

With this album’s unpredictable forms, the trio moves confidently beyond its acuity for cultural synthesis, stepping into stranger, more scintillating territory where unexpected shifts and mercurial sounds are the standard. The beauty of Afternoon X lies in its unusual balance of chaos and calm.

There are enough interesting ideas to keep the record from becoming a slog. Even the tracks that aren’t mesmerizing at least have some worthwhile elements to focus on. However, listeners who are more attuned to psychedelic and ambient music may get more out of those pieces.
