On Again and Again, Brilliant Colors aren't doing anything radically different than their contemporaries with similar influences and a similar sound, but they do what they do with conviction and just enough weirdness to give them a leg up on the competition.

While they're still a talented band, you can't help but wonder how much more memorable they'd be if they applied as broad a sense of dynamics to their albums as their labelmates.

If you are looking to enjoy a continuation of the gals' intriguing blend of Breeders-esque harmony and Tall Dwarves-ish bombast, you may find yourself listening to this otherwise fine record Again and Again.

The 11 tracks on their sophomore record, Again and Again, compromise a brief sugar high clocking in at just under 30 minutes, the totality of the album a fun, slightly too tame summer listen.

This second full-length is like looking at fog through a clean window. There's nothing there, and boy can you ever hear that nothing clearly.

Again And Again feels like it's skimming the dreaminess of that era without retaining any of its prickly quirk-or worse, any of its personality.

Their impression is clear, but the soul, and even the primary reason why this sort of music was great in the first place, is coldly removed. It makes for a slightly uncanny listen, like a collection of all the filler tracks from '88 twee.
