Mar 30, 2020Dark and strange, with a haunting sound and disturbing lyrics, Alice may represent the definition of the horror genre in music.
-
MichaelE.Aug 3, 2002Pure, unadulterated, scary, emotional genius. Tom's my hero. (Does that sound pandering?)

LenH.Aug 4, 2002Like everything Waits does...it grows on you the more you listen to it. Beautiful, dark and desperate. It made me want to learn more about the back story. The only drawback, if you're not a Waits fan, this is not going to change your mind.

JohnoMar 24, 2005Warm, poetic, funny, exciting, dark, inspired and utterly compelling. Sounds like a typical Tom Waits album. Tom is everything that's good about music. This album is the proof.

markNov 30, 2006there is no finer album in its genre, whatever that genre might be. waits is a little like psychoanalysis or lsd - until you have "experienced" it, there is no understanding it.

Awards & Rankings
-
While there is nothing new on Alice, the songs he develops are well-structured, elegant and as bawl-worthy as ever.
-
Waits' voice has always been an acquired taste, but those on the bus will appreciate the way he throws himself into every track as if haunting the characters like some sort of lunatic guardian narrator.
-
The sheer melodic gorgeousness of the finest songs here make Alice the pick of Waits's new matched set.
