This is a solid, laid-back effort that gets better with each spin.

If it had a few more up-tempo songs like Belle Starr and This Is Us, I would have given it a 10,

Husband and I have been followers of Mark Knopfler since the early 80s having attended two European concerts. Fan of Emmylou since 60s, so the combination is really "special" and we love every release on the album. Great album, great artists and as fans, this is number "1" and yes, we are over 60 ourselves but appreciate great music. This is a wonderful CD. Their concert is also one of the best I have seen in a while. They were just in Washington, DC and they had the crowd on their feet screaming and yelling for more and together they are amazing. Both Emmylou and Knopfler are so talented, their voices, music, arrangements, etc. I hope they hook up again and do more. Just look at the RollingStone top sellers on their This is a wonderful CD. Just look at the RollingStone top sellers on their list for recording artist today and it's enough to make you want to scream! Most of those artist are so bad. Most of the young recording artist today are not even real musicians! Catch Emmylou and Knopler's gig if you can--you will not be disappointed. Expand

This CD was sent from heaven. Not sure if it was rock anad roll heaven, or just plain heaven. I tend to go with the latter. Sonically beautiful and perfect. The songwirting is excellent. We needed this CD. Thank you.

A solid album with some sound out tracks as good as anything they've produced, but perhaps let down from "perfection" by a few less memorable songs

Listening to the tracks in my local CD store, trying to decide whether to buy the album, I ended up being very disappointed by the cliche'd quality of so many of the lyrics. Knopfler has lyrically been at his most poetic on his previous three albums (Shangri'La, Ragpickers Dream, and Sailing To Philadelphia), so the pedestrian nature of much of the material was a real let-down. So that when Emmy-Lou kicked off a track with "My father always told me..." I just walked away. Sorry to be so harsh, but it reflects my disappointment. Here's hoping Knopfler's next effort will take him further on his earlier trajectory -- higher and brighter with his trademark excellent story-in-song. Expand

Don't get the low ratings from the critics on this one. This CD is chock full of beautiful, sonically fantastic, well-written tunes and performances.

I've listened to many duet albums, and this may be the best yet. I'm not really a country music fan, but Knopfler and Harris have put together a "feel good"--touch of country album. Knopfler plays his guitar with so much feeling. Get in you car. Put the top down. Turn the music up and go for a cruise through the countryside. You'll feel refreshed.

This is a lovely album. Get a nice glass of good wine...sit in the easy chair and let it flow into your ears. I first heard them perfom a song on IMUS. I don't usually buy CD's but I went out and found this one as soon as I heard it was released... I find different nuances each time I listen. Maybe recording over a long period of time isn't such a bad idea! A+++

The voices of Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris blend so well I hope they make another CD together. Hopefully it won't take another 7-10 years. Both rock!!!

Potentially a great album, but an overpolished production makes it only a good album. When will Knopfler stop being an audiophile and start being a musician again? - there's a heart missing from this record.

What a fantastic album! Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris have produced a gem of a record, filled with songs that are sweet, sad and above all, soulful. Mark's guitar work is as usual sublime, and I love the way he's been introducing new sounds into his repertoire with this and Shangri-La, such as the Silvertone twang on Beachcombing, and the slide on Right Now. The one fault i can find in this album, though it's really more the wistful dreams of someone who loves nothing more than seeing the great man rip that 6 minute final solo of Telegraph Road out on stage, it's that some tracks could have used some extended guitar. Right Now was begging for some juicy little slide lead licks in the middle. Anyway, from the lovely little drum beats of Beachcombing to the fading refrain of Mark's famous Les Paul at the end of If This is Goodbye, this record had me enthralled...everytime I first listen to an MK album, it sends shivers down my spin and brings an enormous grin to my face. I'm sure this album will do the same for you! Expand

Very much in the vein of Knopfler's recent work - laconic, somewhat bitter and lushly produced. Listening, I found myself wondering if Emmylou wanted to push Knopfler a little harder and if he refused... both his vocals and guitar work are relentlessly laid back. This results in some unfortunate homogenization of the tracks, with nothing standing out as inspired or challenging. The younger Mr. Knopfler was edgy and wonderful, taking chances and writing songs that celebrated life's little observations. His guitar was bright, emotional and daring. The current musician cannot be bothered, it seems, to invest himself in such risks. While the first Dire Straits album was a lesson to all of us guitarists, this is all stuff we can do in our sleep. I appreciate that Emmylou Harris continues to evolve (especially in her work with Lanois) and will always cherish her '70's output with reverence - but this is a no-brainer for her as well. Expand

  1. The two couldn't be more at odds vocally, but Knopfler's laconic drawl is like an easy chair for Harris' fluid pipes.
  2. All the Roadrunning--while beautiful--seems somehow underwhelming, and without a true centerpiece.
  3. While over-produced and quite sentimental, this is a very sweet record.
