There’s a sense of the theatrical blended in subtly among the very genuine declarations of self that pepper the rest of the album.

[Pure Love] spiritedly serves up a full album's worth of way-above-par songs, which are radio friendly. [Mar 2013, p.109]

Fans of melodic rock music with a tinge of punk attitude will find plenty to sing along to here.

Anthems is a confident, solid and ultimately hugely likable debut; Carter and Carroll have succeeded in producing something that on occasion genuinely lives up to its ambitious title.

For a debut album it’s accomplished stuff, though like the Manics before them Anthems is not without its stodgier moments.

They deserve credit for writing and performing confidently with such specificity, but they also deserve some derision for failing to even attempt straying from the pack. Anthems is a good entry into a genre that still offers better.
  7. 10
The album itself consists of 11 tracks of unimaginative pub rock that, at best, rips off The Darkness, and at worst comes across like a bunch of teenagers in their first band.
