Badwater is more accomplished but also less astonishing, a victory of craft over pure sensation.
  2. 80
Speck Mountain have taken the high road, sporting influences in their back pocket as a kerchief rather than wiping them on their sleeve.

It’s a difficult one to love; most of these songs will drift out of your brain almost as soon as they enter.
  4. Feb 6, 2013
Fans of dreamy, spaced out music should definitely put Speck Mountain on their “must listen” list. Current fans of the band will find themselves satisfied with this offering, which deserves to find many, many listeners.

The shadow of Mazzy Star's drowsy psychedelia still hangs heavily over everything they do. But they do it so persuasively, so single-mindedly, that it's never an issue putting that to one side. [Mar 2013, p.110]
  6. 60
Drenched in minimal, slow and moody arrangements, Badwater, like Speck Mountain’s previous efforts, gives no apology for its intentional pace. In fact it revels in it.

At their best, they sound like a still-warm, half-remembered dream. [Feb 2013, p.79]
