Bestival Live 2011 is an understandably honest reflection of the Cure in the popular mind as their commercial high point recedes further into the past, but given Smith and the band's other contemporaneous activities, it's an incomplete portrait.

This is primarily a celebratory set of greatest hits to appeal to casual and obsessive fans alike.

Despite being together for more than 35 years, their sound is tight and refined without sounding tired.

This collection captures a beautiful set from a legendary group that remains vibrant and continues to look forward into the future.

Before Spotify, this album could have qualified as a pretty decent starting point for anyone looking to bridge the gap between 'Friday I'm In Love' and 'Primary'. Now you can just arrange the studio polished tracks into a playlist, this kind of release is demoted to the status of fan favourite.

All 32 tracks are performed with the band's signature gloomy/giddy passion. [16 Dec 2011, p.83]

While the collection speaks highly of the Cure's professionalism, it never catches spark, save for a performance of "The Caterpillar", reportedly their first since 1984.

They've written material that holds up through the looking glass of time, and Bestival is ultimately a testament to a band running through the hits with some level of gusto and verve, making them seem fresh and exciting so many years removed from their gestation.

Bestival offers the opportunity to take a tour of the band's long, fruitful career, stopping at each stylistic turn in their journey to take in the sonic scenery, but it also adds the freshness that only a live performance can bring.

This captures The Cure at their crowd-pleasing best, an ageless band reveling in their past. [Feb 2012, p.83]

The album should serve as both a challenge to younger bands to up their live game and a particularly dynamic treat for fans.

Great thing for fans, but it could be much better. I'd reduce the number of tracks recorded on CD to 20. Lack of second guitar is audible. NotGreat thing for fans, but it could be much better.
