Bliss Release is perhaps a little too derivative to justify the classic status it's been afforded in the band's homeland, but it's still a delightfully charming debut, made even more impressive by their hastily assembled beginnings.

Cloud Control's debut is making an early play for the feel-good record of 2011. There are more hooks in Bliss Control's thirty-nine minutes than in Captain Birdseye's entire fleet.

Cloud Control's lyrics may not be revolutionary, but that isn't the point of Bliss Release. It is a demonstration of truly versatile, fresh talent, a debut full to the brim of completely absorbing, compelling songs.

It sounds a bit too much like it was made a year ago for Cloud Control's folk-rock to really stand out against new releases from, say, Okkervil River, or altogether newer acts like Grouplove. That doesn't mean Bliss Release is impossible to enjoy--far from it--but it does make it hard to imagine many new listeners making the time for it, and that's a shame.

Not cooler-than-thou, and musically precise while retaining the playful looseness and imminent musical joy of psychedelic musical experimentation. [Jul 2011, p.79]

As debuts go this is in its way a throwback to a bygone era when bands offered up flawed but fertile inaugural efforts of the kind that made "promising" a buzz word before there were buzz words.
