Smoke Fairies still possess great harmonies and sweet melodies, but they now come steel clad. [Jun 2012, p.92]

The mood of gathering gloom occasionally drifts rather close to torpor, but Feel It Coming Near and the sublime Awake usher the darkness in beautifully.

There's a gritty, lucid vein [in the album's songs] running just below the top layer of haze, the words' bite stinging all the more for their burial under all those dank guitar tones and harmonies as dark and delicate as black lace.

Blood Speaks a largely timeless-feeling piece which not only sounds like it could have been written any decade over the last 40 years or so, but feels eternal in the way it runs its course.

It's a bold step, and one that can't quite sustain itself but Blood Speaks is a force of nature, and in more senses than one.
  6. Though less folky than their 2010 debut, Blood Speaks sticks to the harmonies and arpeggios formula that made their Jack White-produced "Gastown" single so memorable.

One can easily be seduced by the pleasant surfaces of the sound into the gloom beneath.
