Most of the album mines a similar sonic terrain, but La Havas excels when she takes bigger risks.

Although Blood only features ten predominantly short songs, the myriad flashes of brilliance render the album’s brevity irrelevant.

This work leaves the debut, impressive as it was, in the dust.

All the component parts seem present, but they don’t quite add up to a greater whole.

Lianne La Havas has grown up, branched out, written some devastatingly honest songs, and presented a highly competent album.

A gorgeous voice, let down slightly by tame songwriting.

Blood struggles to shift out of platitude territory with lyrics fixated on horizons, stars and sunsets, and it soon becomes apparent that La Havas is content not to go much deeper than vague universalism requires.

A perfect blend of Pop and Neo-Soul, she paints solid pictures with her composition and lyrics. The subject matter is many times par-the-course for most pop songs, but Lianne like to put twists that skew a song from its assumed direction. "What You Don't Do" is a great example of this; taking a pretty normal concept and executing it in a refreshing way.
Also, the compositions are almost flawless. Everything from the textured and layered "wall of sound" on "Unstoppable", to the brilliant guitar riff on "Tokyo", to the simple guitar ballad in "Ghost", is done with care and respect for the song's intended tone.
Not to mention Lianne herself, who delivered song after song of powerful belting. She sounds better than ever, and it really shows.
Probably my biggest complaint about "Blood" is it's lack of buildup during songs. Lianne is great at making nice, complete phrases that come at you off the bat, but neglects actually maturing those phrases as the song goes on. A minor complaint, but it adds to the overall lack of really memorable moments on the album.
Overall a really solid album and a great unique sound is the promise of Blood. Lianne La Havas has shown herself as a remarkable artist, and I only hope she can continue to create stuff like this in the future.

Her music joyful, poised, and classy, and her strong songwriting -- filled with clever metaphors and allegories -- is anchored by her feathery voice. The whole album floats along effortlessly. Even the bossa nova freakout, "Never Get Enough," is daring without being showy. Blood is a throwback album and a reminder of the simple pleasures in life. Expand
