As he moves on after his great album IGOR, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST solidifies his storytelling through this album, not only his production is more diverse this time, his lyrics make a personal but enjoyable body of work, the features have their moment to shine and he knows how to work with them and their role in each song, I'm satisfied with this.

It feels like Tyler has learned a lot since Cherrybomb where the attempt to tie so many styles and sounds together ultimately made the record quite messy, I think with Igor and Flowerboy being so cohesive and being slightly less ambitious in the variety of styles they tried to adopt in comparison to Cherrybomb it is clear Tyler learned a lot musically which left him much better equippedIt feels like Tyler has learned a lot since Cherrybomb where the attempt to tie so many styles and sounds together ultimately made the record quite messy, I think with Igor and Flowerboy being so cohesive and being slightly less ambitious in the variety of styles they tried to adopt in comparison to Cherrybomb it is clear Tyler learned a lot musically which left him much better equipped to make CMIYGL. I think this is Tyler's best album, simply because it seems to be his most ambitious one yet, while also being as polished as Flowerboy and Igor. The features are great too, lil Wayne and NBA Youngboy fit really well on their respective tracks. And while I think that he managed to use different sounds and styles on this record, they all fit well together and make for a listening experience with plenty of variety without feeling scattered. This album is amazing from start to end. If you ignore the rather boring 9 minute song with Brent Faiyaz and Fana Hues, it goes by smoothly and has some of the hardest songs to date on here. Tyler is one of the best rappers of this generation and I hope his momentum doesn't die down for a long time.

Songs recommended: Sir Baudelaire, Corso, Lemonhead, Wusyaname, Lumberjack, Hot Wind

Call Me If You Get Lost is Tyler's victory lap after the grammy awarded 'IGOR'. iGOR moved away from the rap genre, to explore more of an R+B/Soul sound, but on this project Tyler delved back into the genre that launched him as an artist. The track 'I thought you wanted to dance' is a reggae song, reinforcing the fact that Tyler has been able to excel in any genre he has chosen. While not as strong as his latest album, IGOR, call me if you get lost is an extremely phenomenal display of flow, writing, tone, and just sheer talent. This is my favorite album by him just because of how consistent it really is and how powerful a lot of these tracks are.

A refreshing blend of Tyler's growth sonically and writing. Tyler flexes the strength in his writing within the first half of the album, paying homage to his roots in rap, and finishes the album beautifully. Great listen, but I still prefer the strong/cohesive narrative of Igor and the awe-inspiring openness of Flower Boy.

Indeed, I understand the cover of the album: it is a journey. Navigate between the hip-hop of West Coas, to a funk, neo-soul, impressive. IGOR's narrative in "Wilshire" still holds. Suddenly, I would have given more spotlight to Ty on "WUSYUNAME" and less to Lil 'Wayne on "HOT WIND BLOWS" (he devoured the song). I don't think I need to comment further; it's your turn to take flight.

But, when I listened to this album a second time, I got a better grasp of the style, production, and lyrics. Stylistically, it continues with the rough kind of production on IGOR blended with the crisp-sounding beats on Cherry Bomb. And musically, the album is like a combination of the neo-soul parts of IGOR on some songs and the summer vibes of Flower Boy on others. The lyrics on this album are on-point; not a single moment on the album felt off-beat, and Tyler has pretty much stayed the same ever since Flower Boy. And the story, although abstract, is well told and is something almost anybody can relate to. Personally, I think the album started a little bit weak but gets better as it goes on; and at the end, the album ends strongly. "CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST" is a wonderful, although kind of bumpy, brilliantly creative album that most likely will be served as one of Tyler's classics.

He’s grown so much through the corse of his career, I feel confident saying he’s at that elite level where he won’t miss from here. Now it all comes down to personal preference, which Tyler is your favourite? The Wes Anderson vibe of this project is beautiful, I’m in love with the production on this whole album aside from the mixing on Wilshire. He also brings it lyrically, undeniably his best rapping of his career. A few weaker tracks are what keeps it from a higher score for me, that being said I wouldn’t say there is a BAD song on this body of work. Tyler has been on a bit of a hype train over the past decade. Odd Future were wreaking havoc on stages and demanding for a 17-year-old Earl Sweatshirt to be 'freed' what seemed like a lifetime ago. Following up the incredible and critically-acclaimed IGOR in 2019, it was a surprise for many to witness another great work from Tyler's imaginative brain, this time cosplaying as Tyler Baudelaire, a rich snobbish traveler that is chasing luxury cars and heartbreaks that now has all of the confidence in the world in him and it shows. These are some of the names attributed to ultra-controversial figure turned universally beloved, critically acclaimed, and now Grammy-winning rapper/singer/songwriter/producer Tyler, the Creator. Tyler has had one of the most interesting musical developments of the past decade, going from two projects that could easily be perceived as being edgy for the sake of being edgy, to a vibrantly produced project which still slightly suffered from this style of writing, to Cherry Bomb (which I cannot describe), to his most recent three LPs.
In reality, Tyler was still one of the most polarizing figures in the rap game until his 2017 LP Flower Boy dropped, which garnered immediate success, most prominently outside of Tyler’s core fanbase at the time. This could be considered the start of the current era of Tyler, in which we can receive brilliant records like 2019’s IGOR, a beautiful and heart-wrenching break-up album that marks Tyler’s first foray into a different genre (Neo-Soul). If one were to skip from Goblin or Bastard (which I just refer to as better Goblin), to the current era of Tyler, the difference in sound would be so jarring that you wouldn’t believe you were listening to the same artist.
Ok this is cool and all, but why are you going into such depth about his musical progression without even mentioning the album you’re currently reviewing? Good question.
I think that reviewing this album in depth is fairly impossible without mentioning the course of his career so far, as if this album if anything it is a celebration of Tyler’s personal and musical progression over the past decade or so. Not only does he reference his older projects several times throughout this project, but he has created a project here that takes some of the best qualities of all of his albums and blends them tastefully into what can be considered his magnum opus.
Now, when I say magnum opus, don’t for a second think that this is my favorite project from Tyler. I think IGOR is going to stay as the peak of his career unless he releases an album that runs away with AOTY (CMIYGL isn’t that album). This is just the album where he pieces his entire musical development together to form REALLY good LP.
Here are some of my notes on the best things this album has to offer:
-CORSO has some of the most iconic one-liners of this project as well as a very nuanced and catchy beat.
-WUSYANAME has such an infectious beat and Ty Dolla $ign absolutely makes his presence known despite a limited feature. Anyways, YB betta

This is a perfect example of music being overrated because of the current status of an artist. Tyler, the Creator has been on a tear in recent years, releasing excellent albums one after another. He is deservedly a cultural darling.

That being said, CMIYGL simply isn't up to par with most of Tyler's work. It's his worst album since Cherry Bomb. CMIYGL sounds like a 2010-era mixtape with extremely annoying DJ Drama vocals throughout the entire thing. The actual music simply isn't that enjoyable to listen to - the sounds and hooks on this album are mostly forgettable, even after multiple listens. Tyler's rapping is solid throughout the album, can't lie.

The biggest issue with this album is the production. The mixing is absolutely awful throughout the entire album. Vocals are not clear and beats are muddy. It's not as bad as Cherry Bomb but I would hope not as Cherry Bomb has some of the worst production/mixing ever heard on a commercial release of that magnitude.

Tyler has put out plenty of music that is mixed cleanly, so clearly this is a creative choice, and it's a really bad one. As far as this album winning a Grammy, that is a slap in the face to more than 30 hip-hop albums which came out last year that are all far better than CMIYGL with far more artistic value. A few of them are:

    1176 - Guapdad 4000
To Kill a Sunrise - Kota the Friend and Statik Selektah
    Clouds - NF
Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine - Brockhampton
    The Off-Season - J. Cole
    Planet Her - Doja Cat
    USee4Yourself - IDK
    Vince Staples - Vince Staples
The House Is Burning - Isaiah Rashad
    King's Disease II - Nas
    Certified Lover Boy - Drake
    Donda - Kanye West
The Melodic Blue - Baby Keem
Life of a Don - Don Toliver
    Asin9ne - Tech N9ne
    Murd & Mercy - B.o.B

Further proof that the Grammy's are a popularity contest first and a celebration of art last.

Musically the album is all over the place. It is undeniably Tyler, and really caters to all fans of his diverse career - but focus seems to be lacking. I'm unsure how I feel about this. There are moments I really love, but they can be short and then replaced by drawn out monotone beats. There is also WAY too much DJ Drama on this record. I like him, but less is more.

Tyler's more poignant lyrics from his previous two records can also be found, however this album feels way more self-indulgent and falls back on bragging and an array of other consumerist based/trivial topics often found in the tired genre, leading to a number of cringe-y lines that really take away from the music and the whole experience. His music is so unique and well thought out it's a shame that he can't quite full commit to keeping himself out of a box.

I'm going to keep listening and hope that I fall more in love with the record. Highlights so far include SIR BAUDELAIRE, MASSA, RISE, JUGGERNAUT and WILSHIRE. Everything else didn't make a huge impact.

Tyler the Creator is a very talented artist with nine total albums. His newest release being “ CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST,” is filled with deep thought and a creative background. This album has a lot of built up aggression and well thought out lyrics going into different genres. In this album Tyler goes by, “ Tyler Bauldelaire” after the French poet Charles Pierre Baulderlaire, using Charles as a role model in a way sets Tyler up to look as if he has mastered the art.
The album “ CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST,” although the album's beat can be harsh it is very well written . One line in the song “RISE” I enjoyed was, “ I could touch the sky, I didn't see any ceilings,” this just shows that everyone has goals and can touch the sky no matter what gets in the way yet, this album did not reach its full potential, many songs have too harsh of beats and the sound overpowers the singing. In the song “MOMMA TALK,”the beat throughout the entire song is too heavy and it becomes hard to hear the actual lyrics. The beat ends up overpowering the song and diminishing the lyrics' and the focus is drowned out in the background. At the beginning of the song the beat is not as loud, but after the third or fourth line of the first verse the beat ‘drops’ and becomes overwhelming. It is apparent that the beat was meant to be more prominent in this album compared to his others which makes some particularly interested or inclined to listen to “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST,” again.
This album includes many talented artists such as, 42 Dugg, Youngboy, Lil Wayne, Brent Faiyaz, and Lil Uzi as well as many others. One song called, “HOTWIND BLOWS” features Lil Wayne. This specific song has a very “hypnotic” tune, it has slow but rushed instrumentals with soft flute and drums. Lil Wayne's voice is more calming than Tylers in this song and I feel that it helps out the whole album. Lil Wayne allows for a break per say, whereas the rest of the album can be very eccentric. Lil Wayne himself is a very talented artist and the collaboration between himself and Tylers has resulted in an amazing outcome. Although this song is more enjoyable than the others, the beat is still a very prominent issue. At the beginning it is a very soft and slow relaxing beat. As the song continues the beat becomes louder and distracting as many other noises are added in with the background. It diverts attention from the lyrics to the background music. There are “whoosh” noises and the sound of flutes come in at some point. Although it isn't as loud and prominent as it is in these other songs it is still distracting.

“Call Me If You Get Lost” is undoubtedly a strong showing by Tyler, The Creator, to say the very least. Despite this album’s fantastic structuring and delivery, however, something that is always to be expected with this artist is that what he creates next will undoubtedly be even better.

A strong addition to Tyler’s catalogue and a good intergenerational connection for the fans. [Aug 2021, p.69]

To Tyler’s credit, he didn’t rest on his laurels. Instead, he crafted a concise piece of work about a very confident adult realizing his own ego is both his best asset and indeed his worst enemy.
