One of the most medicore pop albums of the decade, CHARLIE's 12 songs all tumble into the pile of genericity that powers this record to the end. It definitely lacks in personality and originality too. These are simply songs that would be played on the radio once or twice and then put away for good because all they are is songs with a tune and that's it. There's no heart here!

All the 12th tracks on the album Charlie Puth produced himself and this is what he thinks about his 3rd album: "I call these 12 songs a story that I was living through. I look back at it, thinking, I can't believe I ever let myself get that low, but at the same time maybe I've made a great album, because I do feel this is my best album so far. This would be my first album if I had a time machine." So everyone just listen to this album, immerse yourself in the world of beautiful music and enjoy! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. CHARLIE is 100% the most authentic version of Charlie Puth. This album makes you feel relatable to the real world, everything you go through in life you’re not alone. So many people may experience the same thing.. Charlie Puth made this album for people so they can relate to, along side the real story behind each song and what Puth went through, the album represents a dichotomy with a little bit of a humor added up to the songs like That’s Hilarious using “HAHAHA” .. meaning that you can always find peace and positive aspect of things even in the worst situations meaning everything’s gonna be fine in the end you just need to be patient. Putting ugly emotions along with beautiful piano layers, Charlie’s angelic voice which sometimes turns into a angry heartbroken dude who feel like he has lost everything and his life is ending but at the same time getting things out of his chest by singing his emotions to the microphone, making art out of his miserable, most vulnerable uncomfortable periods! All I wanna say is if you’re looking for a music to relate to, CHARLIE is your best choice ! Expand

Charlie didn't discover the wheel or create anything innovative, but he certainly did something enjoyable.
It's a nice pop, but it doesn't have a lot of peak moments (at least not elation). Light Switch is the best.
The production is, as it should be, the best part. After all, he is liked for a reason.

Much can be said of the articles about Charlie recently but there's no denying that the man is hella talented and that his latest album is his greatest yet. While the first 2 failed to be cohesive in sound, themes or quality, CHARLIE fixed them all and came through like a wrecking ball. It details the heartbreak of a failed relationship (or probably more) from every aspect. The production is amazing and the way he's built some tracks up are impressive. Charlie Be Quiet! is proof of that, the whispering chorus turning into pop-punk with the lyrics of him wanting to be careful of talking about his feelings towards her is just perfect. It's my most played song this week.

I loved seeing him grow as an artist and as a person. The album CHARLIE came about during the pandemic and he was able to utilize the virtual audience of TikTok to give his fans snippets of what he's working on. I think that's genius because no artist has ever really done that before. He shares everything and wants us to feel like we came along this path with him! He is a musician with incredible intellect and knows his craft so well. These may be just hyper-pop songs to the average listener, but to musical producers and those willing to hear him tell his story, these songs define his life and what he experienced. I was watching his interviews and one commonality in most of these songs is that he tried to combine the "ugly" sounds with the "beautiful" ones to melodically and symbolically describe what he went through. Charlie is the kind of artist who genuinely takes it to heart and wants us all to relate to some shape or form of his work. I'm usually a major fan of his soft, slow ballads because let's admit, the man has a gorgeous and angelic voice... BUT I ended up loving every song on this album anyways since (1) I'm a huge fan and (2) these songs are really catchy to head bop to, esp. in the car! Dear Charlie Puth, THANK YOU for being vulnerable and real with us. Wishing you great success as always. We love you! Expand

Listening to the whole album from start to finish after a year of being teased through the TikTok Snippets have changed the way I view this album as it should, a whole body of work. Sonically it is one of his best ones to date too alongside VoiceNotes. That album had multiple stories grouped into one, but this one is a emotional yet fun roller-coaster from start to finish. Beginning with That's Hilarious, to set the tone of the album and ending with No More Drama, showcases where he is now in life. It's pure pop, but it's fun and upbeat. The use of the iconic juno-synths and fast tempo drums and percussive elements are what make it so CHARLIE. Lyrically, his songwriting this time around really has improved and he thought out well on how to reel in the listener.

Very excited for the future of this pop musical genius.

    I give this album a 3/10 -- A wasted potential. Why?

The album is not the best one I've listened to. Lyrics are definitely common, easy to understand but they lack depth, storytelling, and emotion. I assume it’s because the singer isn’t interested or is afraid to give too much of themselves. I don’t know the real reason but it definitely affected the whole vibe of the final product imo. By his whole "This is the most me" marketing I was expecting deeper lyrics, lyrics that aren't all about him losing a girl (maybe he should have named this album differently, not Charlie?), more bridges, better vocals, not 2 minute tiktok ringtones.

Since he's often regarded as a genius, and I even took his songwriting course, obviously I was expecting more. Especially since he's proven to be better than this. Him saying in one of his interviews that "before he was only about getting that hit song out” makes no difference because this album is full of extremely short songs with little to no substance and an immense amount of autotune (THAT HE DOESN'T NEED) that's catered towards TikTok audience.

It's not about conveying a message anymore. In my opinion, he made a mistake by taking Elton John's criticism so literally and running with it. It ruined his vibe, and his artist identity and now we have what's supposed to be a professional, well-crafted album come off amateurish. I know he can do better than this, but maybe he doesn't care.

While some of the songs slip into genericity, such as the forgettable There’s a First Time For Everything, others are 80s-inspired, synth-led earworms. Smells Like Me stands out as one of the album’s highlights, a masterclass in pop writing with an ultra-memorable hook.
