I think one day Joss Stone will make a great record, but this isn't it. There are signs of progress on her latest album, but they are in short supply. Colour Me Free gets on a roll midway through, peaking with "Governmentalist" before falling away much like her previous LP. The irony of the album title is also rather concerning, since Stone was not given the freedom by her record companyI think one day Joss Stone will make a great record, but this isn't it. 1. She continues to hit each note with the precise amount of retro pomp that one would expect, and there are again moments when the '70s soul love affair gets a little carried away.
  2. The second half succumbs to R&B overproducers, unfortunately, but for a while, she's on the right freedom trail.
  3. Devon’s finest makes a Motown-laced return.
