I enjoy how, as Mia Doi Todd develops, each of her albums sound increasingly more cohesive and effortless, but with tons of complexity and beautiful song writing in each. Cosmic Ocean Ship is on one level a great Summer album - easy, warm, but on another it's questions are bubbling under and ask the listener to consider, if you want. Stand out tracks are "Under the Sun" and "Canto de Lemanja."

The most resonant part of Doi Todd's music is the quiet darkness that she twists into an undercurrent of tenderness. Cosmic Ocean Ship is more openly joyous than other songs on previous albums, like 2008's Gea, and perhaps not as "mysterious" or grabbing.

Cosmic Ocean Ship is Todd's most "exotic" recording, but it's easily one of her most ambitious, focused, and satisfying as well.

Yet if Todd makes it easy to poke fun at her earnestness, she also makes music that's hard to resist: Layering airy but precise vocal melodies atop hushed, largely acoustic arrangements, the singer offers up a crystal-clear distillation of the vintage Laurel Canyon sound currently in vogue among Todd's feather-and-denim cohorts.
