Crawl Space was undoubtedly one of the best albums of 2017. It was diverse, well written and produced. Tei Shi has become one of my favorite artists.

Debuting with a collection of eclectic pop and R&B songs, Tei Shi shows off her impressive range of influences. Second single "How Far" conjures visions of Kevin Parker in its interpretation of rock while "Baby" is a tastefully jazzy number on a bed of bass, guitar, synth and organ. Though Crawl Space is tinged with frustration in its best moments, she finds room to celebrate her pop dreams. Following an audio recording of a childhood confession ("I just hope one day I can be like Britney Spears") Tei Shi winks at the 80s with "Say You Do", a contemporary pop morsel featuring a spoken word bridge. The album runs out of steam midway through (her balance seems off after "Justify") but there are enough top-notch compositions ("Keep Running", "Creep", "Como Si") to warrant a download. A very enjoyable record from an up-and-coming young talent. Expand

Tei Shi has honed a dynamic spectrum of poppy R&B full of dexterity and revelations, and produced a solid debut LP in the process.

Penultimate track "Your World" is perhaps the most forward-thinking item here; with the unusual mash of R&B and dream pop, it offers something novel, where some other parts of the album do have a tendency to be a touch heavy on paying homage to styles past. But the sounds and homages on offer are diverse enough that this is a minor quibble with what should otherwise be held up as a model debut album.

Because of its contemplative nature, Crawl Space functions best as a deep listen rather than a casual playlist; while pleasant, its concentrated complexity requires attention to fully appreciate Teicher’s vision.
