Sturgill Simpson putting out consistently innovative and quality stuff, whether its a post-apocalyptic concept album with a Netflix anime accompaniment (Sound and Fury) or assembling a top notch bluegrass band with Sierra Hull ripping mandolin solos and singing backup. Top notch.

The Sunday Valley songs survive the transition best, particularly All The Pretty Colours, but the psychonaut jiber-jabber from 2014's Metamodern Sounds In Country Music album comes a strong second. [Jan 2021, p.86]

Cuttin' Grass Vol 1 is Simpson's warmest, most life-affirming record by a country mile. [Jan 2021, p.26]

Part of Simpson's appeal lies in how he blurs genres, so it's a bit ironic that this single-minded collection is one of his best records, but it is: it's an album where the joy in the music's creation is palpable and infectious.
