This album is a very beautiful expression of Kendrick's views and mindsets with everyone's opinions on him and how lost he's been feeling. This isn't as strong as his best album, TPAB, but it is still up there with his best. Some of Kendrick's best work is on this album too.

Tiene mi cancion favorita de todos los tiempos; DUCKWORTH. en la que cuenta la historia de su padre hasta llegar a compton y poder ganarse la vida dignamente como cajero de un KFC. PERFECTO. Right off the bat, this album is very radio-hit heavy with songs like DNA, HUMBLE, and LOVE, with each of those songs being energetic and radio friendly for the most part. DNA vividly describes issues facing our society like racism and gang violence, reminiscent of To Pimp a Butterfly, Kendrick's previous album. DUCKWORTH is one of the greatest songs of all time in my opinion, describing fate and how if one thing had not happened in Kendrick's life, he would have never become the incredible rapper we know today. Overall this album is extremely introspective with tracks like DUCKWORTH, FEAR, and FEEL, with the latter being the most introspective, describing his issues with the system and the lack of care for him personally from his fans and critics alike. The only thing holding this album back is the very commonly liked track on this album, LOVE. It lacks substance and while it is a beautifully composed song, it just doesn't fit on this album for me. Other than that, this album is near flawless. Expand

Kendrick Lamar's album DAMN. is an incredible album. Easily one of the greatest rap albums of all time. Humble is an outstanding record. Kendrick's vocals on this track are some of his best, making it one of the best rap songs ever. The music video for this song is also one of his best. Kendrick and Rihanna's vocals on the track loyalty are also some of the best I've seen.

It felt very relevant then in 2017 amidst the turmoil of the trump administration, police brutality cases and political landscape post 2016. Unfortunately it's just as relevant now as the transition to the Biden administration proves fruitless and the negligence of the police led to more black death. It tackles death, love, money ,ego and so much more with 0 to no effort. The heady "ELEMENT "&"PRIDE" are the nearest we get to the funk of TPAB. Other diverging track's move into fresh yet still familar territory. The searing "DNA" feels like more of a take down than a political anti-colonialism banger it it. "HUMBLE " takes an egotistical look in the mirror as Lamar takes his earned seat at the rap parthenon. His storytelling as always never takes a break from the detached killing in "XXX " or the woozy "YAH" and epic "DUCKWORTH" . A Peabody winning record setting achiever keeps you entertained and thinking throughout ,stays familiar but grows enough to surprise. The production is off the hook. Im so enamoured by this record. Ppl are tempted to critique this record as "not up to par" due to it being less dense or more pop than the previous two albums but that's what draws me to it most. It has it's own personality that sets it apart from it's siblings. Favourites:literally every song Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DAMN. Is Kendrick Lamar exploring the duality of his character from wickedness to weakness. Personally, I feel like the strongest part of this project is the songwriting. Kendrick, like his previous projects, masterfully and succinctly describes every theme on the album from front to back, from talking about his lustful ambitions to his fearful weaknesses. However, I feel like that some of the songs on this album are lacking. Some of Kendrick's best bangers are on here like DNA., but some tracks seem a bit derivative to other popular tracks made around the same time. The songwriting talent shines through, but some of the music itself lacks the ambition that makes Kendrick special. Overall a solid and energetic listen, albeit it falls off a bit towards the second half of the project.

Favorite Tracks: DNA. YAH. ELEMENT. FEEL. PRIDE. LUST. DUCKWORTH.

    Least Favorite Tracks: LOVE. GOD.

On one hand there are people who adulate this album excessively merely because it’s a Kendrick Lamar album, while on the other there’s people who blindly hate on it without trying to understand it. DAMN. shows Kendrick trying to make an album which dives into his psyche, and for that matter the human psyche’s emotions and feelings. For the most part, he does this well. Tracks like DUCKWORTH, XXX., FEAR., PRIDE., ELEMENT and DNA. are amazing songs with admirable production and meaningful lyrics. BLOOD. and LUST. are good tracks but don’t hit as much as the ones mentioned before. HUMBLE. is in its own category as though I believe it’s above BLOOD. and LUST., it’s radio friendly and slightly shallow meaning is reminiscent of Swimming Pools, and consequently makes me hesitant to praise it too much. YAH. and GOD. are decent at best, some may say mediocre, there’s honestly not too much to say about them. LOYALTY. and LOVE. are definitely regrettable. LOYALTY. is just annoying and obviously engineered for the radio, while LOVE. is soulless, uncharacteristic and is probably the only Kendrick song since 2011 which I’d actually classify as bad. At times, Kendrick also fails to tie in all these ideas together - the album lacks cohesion at times. With that being said, the album is still full of good songs, and the concepts Kendrick explores are impactful and deep. Kendrick should have just fleshed out some ideas more, especially for LOVE. and LOYALTY. Expand

It explores all of the same ideas with a sound that Kendrick knew would make him some serious dough. I still think it does a great job addressing the growing racial issues in America with more anger than his previous album. Overall, the anger of this album definitely strikes you and there are may catchy songs on the album that are very enjoyable. Overall, a few misses, but the good definitely outweighs the bad, overall a huge fan. Expand

First of all: the production is a lot weaker compared to his other albums, the story, and overall songs as well. But the biggest thing is that this album is not as good as TPAB or GKMC (10s), UU (9) or S80 (8), which means that the only fair score to give this thing is a 7. The production, features, flows, lyrics and concept are all weaker on DAMN. I still like this album quite a bit, but it's nothing compared to the rest of his discography. DAMN. is not nearly as great as Kendrick Lamar’s two previous albums but it is still far better than most music related. It is much more commercial and it is harder to decipher than TPAB but the lyrics, production and themes are still on point. I love every song but cuts like ELEMENT. and HUMBLE. are pretty lackluster compared to the final three songs.

A less deranged response to celebrity than Kanye West’s Yeezus, more imaginative than Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP or Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, it shares with the former an economy of form, and with the latter two the giddy energy of an artist coming into perfect sync with their audience. It’s also a sumptuous sounding pop record, polite streamlined mass market psychedelia. [Jun 2017, p.64]
