MichaelAJun 26, 2003This is one of the most amazing CDs I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It certainly requires more than one listen to appreciate the work you're hearing. I find it amazing that so much art can be crammed into 60 minutes of music, it's truely beautiful.

nickbJun 26, 2003good god they are going to change music as we know it.

-
DannyCJun 26, 2003One of the greatest albums ever... and probably the most dynamic. Beautiful melodies layered over chaotic driving rythems that jump from every emotion across the board. It will make most good musicians feel like they lack in creativity. Just F...ing amazing

JacquiJun 26, 2003Omar and Cedric are BRILLIANT!!!! I've been listening to this album nonstop!! If you haven't picked up your copy...SHAME ON YOU!!

-
MikeKJun 26, 2003the sounds that they produce with their instruments are simply incredible. on top of this, they manage to stay melodic and astonishingly creative. this album really showcases the talents of the musicians involved.

TimSep 12, 2003Jake....how can art and poetry be pretentious? The same ignorant asses like you said the same crap about the new Shai Hulud album as well, when in reality you couldn't put out anything remotely creative compared to either Shai Hulud or The Mars Volta.

EvanGJul 19, 2004By far the best CD ever released. Proving once and for all that music can incorporate peices of every other for of art. Even down to the CD booklet, this record hits a peak on every level. Visually, Mentally, Audibly especially, everything. I got chills and even breathed heavier on some parts of this song. And if you wanna call that gay go ahead, you write bullshit songs.

JoseHAug 28, 2004Finally, an album that is released with no bussines intentions. An album for intelligent people who need to feel the power, beauty and magnificence of music & poetry. Leave behind the idea of verse-chorus(X2) ending. Forget about silly bands waillin' about love and violence. Just listen to it ! Feel it and then try to understand it !

JustinWFeb 26, 2005This album has some of the most refreshing and exciting music I've heard. To appreciate it you'll need to listen to it over and over again, but luckily with this album that is a good thing. Every time I listen to it I find something new to love. Highly reccomended.

AlexNov 11, 2005Simply put, among the best albums of its generation. The love child spawn of Led Zeppelin, RHCP, Hendrix, and Pink Floyd.
-
-
BrandonTNov 28, 2007This is not an album that you can download from your shady neighborhood torrent site, and breeze through. Buy this album, Listen to the disc LOUDLY, (headphones or dolby surround for full effect) and immerse yourself in the fact that this was an album that is, from start to finish, so densely layered in sound and ambiance that it will last far longer than anything on MTV today.

25Nov 22, 2008This album is the middle ground between ATDI and what Mars Volta would later become. It avoids Mars Volta's later excesses time and time again over its hour-long running time, breaking out of free jazz sections and ambient noise at just the right moments. Not an extraneous second here.

-
Sep 10, 2010One of the most amazing albums ever made. really beautiful and intense. I have listened to it probably 500 times and its still captivating. Its great to see what happens when you put together a group of truly skilled musicians who are constantly pushing the envelope.
-
Nov 30, 2010The Mars Volta's debut De-Loused In The Comatorium is an absolute treat to the ears. It balances progressive rock with post-hardcore and all of it just sounds so amazing. The songs make no sense, yet every word of it, I absolutely love. All In All, De-Loused is one of my favorite albums and it needs to be listened too. A+

Oct 22, 2013It is no exaggeration, this album reinvented the progressive rock genre and brought it into the future. It's a sprawling, epic, fantastical hour of jazz, punk, and post-hardcore influences, (to name a few.) I was shocked to find this masterpiece absent from Rolling Stones' Top 100 albums of the 00's (in my opinion, it takes the gold!)
-
Feb 15, 2014Definitely the most powerful and deep of The Mars Volta's albums. Labelling this as progressive rock doesn't really do it justice. One of the greatest achievements of this album is that it manages to hit you with oceans of different sounds and noises but still provides catchy hooks and melodies. To really experience the album properly, you need to listen to it all the way through multiple times.
-
Mar 10, 2019Crazy album full of ideas and a crazy mix between Latin rhythms and progressive rock... A cornerstone in modern prog imo. One of the finest achievements of music in this century

StevenHJun 30, 2003Amazing album. 2002 we had little to no good music released but 2003 is already shaping up well with albums like this and Radiohead's 'Hail to the Thief'

MikkoVJul 9, 2003spectacular album!!! What is best at it.. they have created their own music&style.. and once it got you there is no going back!!! i love this music...!! but is there an album you can give full 10.. maybe not? your own album?hmm

stevecDec 8, 2004awesome and enjoyable, there is something missing though (paul, jim and tony) it will never sound complete to me, but this is the closest it can get, cedric is god of emo

Matt?AJun 10, 2007This album is pure tastiness. Me only gripe with it is the "nothing" sections, where all u can hear is the epic sounds of nothingness, u kno? I must say that Televators IS agony, in the most beautiful and amazing way possible. Albeit, Frances the Mute is a bit more of my style...this album is gangsta, tho! Like a 9.3/10, I'd say.

FoxizofBurniceJun 26, 2003It's a comatic structure, it's for everybody who wants sleeping, being arise, it's about all the true story of a the clone of you when you take any products in your head...

MaxGJul 1, 2003a bit of pink floyd, some sounds and ambiance taken from ATDI (alright) spanish and latin influences. My only regret: where is "cut that city"!!!!

DevinJMay 23, 2007i am a big fan of at the drive-in aswell and i think that the mars volta is amazing, idk why everyone says that atdi is better by far, i think that the talent that is in this band is amazing. Cedric and omar are still crazy at what they do and can seirouslly change the future in the prog. rock world

jethroJul 14, 2003great album.... starts out smoking than tapers off towards the end. the drumming is solid throughout the entire album. requires a couple of listens to sink in. highly recommend

BrennanHJun 25, 2003while sparta has the instrumental sound of atdi, mars volta has the vocals...kind of. bixler and rodriguez have succeded in that they didn't make another atdi album, but left enough sonic treats in there to remind us where they came from. and who the hell is that drummer? best "punk" drummer i've heard in a while.

KevinHNov 28, 2003the concept is great, the lyrics are for your interpretation, but then again so is all great art
-
-
Nov 21, 2011A damn near perfect album which only grows on you with repeated listens. Prog at it's greatest moments, creating an entire different blend of music sounding like nothing else on the market.
-

-
Sep 4, 2011Not quite the Piper at the Gates of Dawn Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez aspired to make, but musically explosive energy. It helps to have Flea and John Frusciante backing you up.
-
BrianMJul 15, 2003Not as good as one would have thought it would have been. But still an interesting debut.
-
-
EdwardPOct 15, 2003It's not exactly my cup of tea but it's music that makes you think ... and that can only be a good thing. However, at times it is a bit over-indulgent and would have benefited from a tighter focus.
-
-
JasonPJul 3, 2003Interesting but miss the energy from the former ATDI. I agree with Pitchfork "it's not fun"....at all!
-
-
gavinJul 6, 2003Useless, meaningless metaphors. Whiningly high vocal range. Unimpressive guitar work. Obnoxious, untrained drums. Electronics and effects add nothing. Hard to believe it took 5+ people to put together something so unwothy of my $10.
-
-
BigPaulPApr 22, 2007That one is just OK for me. It just can't be compared with At The Drive-In for me.

-
-
ChrisBJun 15, 2005Wow, simply awful-sounding with no sense of melody or message. Listening to the lyrics are akin to a drunk's babble after a long night of tequilla, cheap wine, and E&B brandy. If you like prog, stick to Rush.

Awards & Rankings
-
A disjointed mess- brilliant songs gone so awry that I find myself no longer excited by the prospect of listening to the album through, but disappointed.
-
Recall[s] both Fugazi's punk slam and early Santana's psychedelic sheen.
-
Contrary to nearly every other band in music today, the Mars Volta suffer from an abundance of ideas and concepts, not a lack thereof.
