I think naysayers are missing the point of this album. This album is FUN with surprising replayability. The type of album you listen to 3-5 times, then somehow find yourself wanting to throw on without thinking - in the car, at a party, or by yourself.

    Infectious. biggest surprise of 2018.

After Die Lit, the answer is clear, Carti’s song on his previous project was no fluke, and this truly is the young rapper’s sound. While he never truly goes off and spits bars, the sound, feel and features of the album help him never skip a beat. If we saw the Carti we heard on his last project mixed with these features and beats,, this may be an album many look as one of the best of the year. While it’s not as good as his debut mixtape, Die Lit is a great project that still feeds Carti fans and trap rap enthusiasts until his sophomore album releases Expand

This album however is neither clever or entertaining, i don't understand when rappers that have no versatility decide to go for a long track list album. It's better to keep it short and simple, yet this project doesn't.

The amount of ad-libbing in here is really tiring, his flow is good, it has to be since he has no concern with rhyme delivery.

Completely terrible album, and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone

Unfortunately this album stands firmly in the shadow of his last album. His repetitive style is still very enjoyable despite it being repetitive at points but it seems that some of the magic and punch of his flow is dying out. He relies heavily on features such as Lil Uzi Vert and Travis Scott, who make the album respectable and easy to listen too.

I was expecting a project with poor lyrics but I have to admit that I however was appalled by the overall level. I rarely heard such violent, abrasive, shallow, disruptive, childish and disrespectful lyrics from such a popular and appreciated artist. I couldn't act like if I didn't notice it.

Production is decent: too few tracks to be definitely impressed about it but on this side 'Die Lit' has some interesting surprises. As I said I tried to approach this album by focusing my attention on sounds and rhythms more than lyrics but I had no other choice than to recognize that it didn't even tried to be innovative. All the tracks sound pretty much the same. I guess Playboi Carti is original by all the sounds he surprisingly manages to broadcast with his mouth and his particular voice but it is far from the originality I expected. These songs have absolutely no replayability.

The numerous featured artists were unexpected. I wasn't surprised by the presence of Lil Uzi Vert, Gunna, Young Nudy and Chief Keef, but what are Skepta and Bryson Tiller doing in here? Are they also trying to sell their soul to the devil of the shallow and mercantile approach?

I can't stand the popularity of this album because it demands you to voluntarily bleed out of your ears to be acceptable. Everything is so shrill especially Carti's voice. And Pi'erre Bourne's productions don't help at all. Even sonically 'Die Lit' doesn't try to propose something we don't already have heard more than a thousand times before. Repetitive, with a classic structure and without any decent message to carry. Sad but true: the only moment where I vibed during this hole thing were during 'Long Time', the intro. I guess Carti couldn't make better than a strong start.

The production, courtesy of Pi'erre and friends, is the albums strongest aspect. From the laid back wall of synths on the intro, to the industrial-trap vibes present on "R.I.P." and the beautifully looped strings and piano passages on "Shoota", almost every instrumental is sonically rich and rewarding. Playboi Carti, whose style might not appeal to everyone, proves to be an entertaining performer, often complimenting the beats with his youthful energy and melodic flows. Even with some filler tracks and unneeded features, "Die Lit" comes out as one of the best hip-hop projects of 2018, and an important standout in the trap genre.

Carti may seem like not that much at first but thats because that's not what he wants, Carti shows the power of simplicity in music. He Uses what he needs and nothing he doesn't a key example of this is the intro track of this album "Long Time." Carti gives a vibe of nostalgia and reminds me of the standout track from Tyler The Creator's Most recent album, November. Carti uses playful production and simplistic lyrics to make a atmosphere. The Song, "Home (KOD)" makes you feel like your in the exact broken relationship carti is rapping about. The Percussion feels Claustrophobic exactally what it seems carti is going for. The Only time the album fails is on the track Pull Up where the beat and lyrics are too minimal and sleepy for me to care. Great Album and while will most likely not win over haters, Carti's fans will surely love it.

It's fair to say that this album is good, but it is not very risky in the lyrics or beats. The 1st listen was amazing, but after more replays I started noticing the simplicity and similarities to other songs. It is a hard listen after the 1st few times. Some songs can be listened to over and over again and it still will not get old like R.I.P. or Flatbed Freestyle. 7/10

Wow... I don't really know how to start this review but I guess I'll begin by saying this album is just a simple mix of instruments, ad-libs, and barely audible language song after song after song after song, and it's one of the most sonically pleasing projects I've ever listened to. The song messages are very ignorant and pretty braggadocios which fit well with the whole trap bangerWow... I don't really know how to start this review but I guess I'll begin by saying this album is just a simple mix of instruments, ad-libs, and barely audible language song after song after song after song, and it's one of the most sonically pleasing projects I've ever listened to. The song messages are very ignorant and pretty braggadocios which fit well with the whole trap banger aesthetic. Speaking of trap bangers, EVERY. SINGLE. SONG. is an absolute banger and a complete experience. The repetitive lyrics, beats, instruments, etc.. Should be obnoxious and annoying and a complete pain to the eardrums but it's this feeling and this rhythm that this album puts out that makes it so enjoyable. I literally don't know how to describe how one might feel listening to this album for a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th time. It's not an album that you can go into the first time and expect to get everything out of it but those repeat playthroughs grow on you. One after another you experience something you might not have experienced on a certain track

My best example is the track "Lean 4 Real" where I was a little annoyed by the repetitive chorus my first run through the album. Eventually I got into its vibe and all of a sudden I was singing along, nodding my head, then I was dancing to it and doing hand movements and having a blast all on my own. Then I heard Skepta's verse and it just got me hyped, it got me feeling tough, it was all just an experience and this moment repeated itself on multiple songs throughout the album. Many people will dismiss this album as devoid of substance, simplistic, mumble rap at it's lowest form, etc... but they're expecting something like Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly or Nas' Illmatic from this album. It'd be the same a listening to Beastie Boys' License to Ill and expecting to get the same lyrical depth and flow of Enter the Wu Tang. It's just not made to be that kind of album or work of art.

When judged on it's own merit and strengths, Die Lit literally shouldn't be as good as it is. Playboi Carti's vocals and features are perfect in almost every track and they absolutely add even more sounds to the very simplistic, minimalist sound of the album where you think it's full but really it's Playboi Carti and his features filling in the gaps and it leaves you satisfied and full and you enjoy the ride for what it is. It's honestly an anomaly of an album and I definitely think it's a stepping stone to unlocking the full potential of trap music. It's definitely something I can see inspiring future generation of rappers and trap artists the way 808's and Heartbreak influenced Emo Rap and how Lil' Wayne's whole early 2000's discography shaped trap and hip hop in the current era.
