When you're operating on such a grand scale, and the exultant, openhearted Enemy/Lover is rarely outpaced by its lofty ambitions.

Shakespeare they ain't, but for those more concerned with pumping their fists next summer than parsing lyrics about orchards, Enemy/Lover is a compelling enough call to action.

Given a wider range of material to show off the group's considerable strengths (Jones is a powerful and expressive vocalist, and the band's control of texture and ambience is exquisite), Dreamers of the Ghetto could have produced a much more compelling debut.

As the album concludes somewhere in the seventh minute of "Tether," all the aim-for-the-heights stuff they're about just becomes its own locked-in loop, an epicness that feels less remarkable than simply familiar.

If there's unifying criticism of this album, it's just that too often this quartet is on its way somewhere, but doesn't really seem to have mapped out the journey all that clearly.

This may be as good as it gets for Dreamers of the Ghetto, and it's really just fair.
