A promising opening salvo from the most consistent One Direction member. Horan showcases his own instrumental abilities; clear, sweet vocals; and emotional vulnerability. It may be safe, but it's also laid-back and easy to listen to. Horan does what he does very well, and knows exactly when and how to edit so not a single track feels forced or over-produced.

I love it. It might not be perfect in certain areas, but someone who just started to stand on his own, it's truly a good effort for a start. Some songs sound better live and it's a testament on how talented he is, so perhaps the next album he can deliver better. But overall, this album is still lovely to listen to. And such a fresh of breath air.

A beautiful, easy, guitar driven album in which Niall shows dedication to his singer songwriter leanings. I'm sure with future albums he will show even more depth to his songwriting, as lyrically there are some weak moments. This album is more adult contemporary than pop, and is a path away from his 1D days that best showcases his rich vocals. I'll certainly be listening to it on repeat.

A cohesive and honest folk rock statement that focuses on craft, not flash. I don't know much about One Direction, but I'm drawn to Niall Horan's music. I'm a particular fan of producer Jacquire King's work, notably with James Bay, which fits well with Horan's organic style. His vocals are unique and evocative, with a warm and unpretentious delivery. I'm hard pressed to single out favorite tracks; I've enjoyed listening to the album as an ensemble and I frankly can't remember the last time I did that with a new album. If pressed, I'd choose the yearning Too Much to Ask, the bluesy You and Me, and the understated title track. I especially appreciate Horan's willingness to take a quiet, thoughtful, or delicate approach to a song--when so much pop music seems flashy, gimmicky, and filled with screaming vocals. In his lyrics and music, Horan isn't holding back emotionally and his honesty is what makes me interested to follow his career and see how he develops. A great debut. Expand

I grew up listening to many of the artists that Horan cites as his musical influences, so I find his album very appealing. He has a sweet voice that lends itself well to expressing vulnerability and wistfulness, but he's got a bit of a rasp too and that works well in songs like On My Own. I recommend getting the deluxe version because it has one of my favorite tracks, Mirrors. I was brought into the 1D juggernaut fandom by my daughter. I was immediately struck by Niall's voice and musical ability. Both shine on this beautifully written album. Slow Hands is the song that won't die, and rightly so. You won't hear anything like that on the radio today. It is a clever romp that takes me back to my 80s prime. Other notable listens include On the Loose, a breezy tune that will bring back memories of the one that got away, and you're glad they did. You and Me and Mirrors are sublime and deserve to be savored for the lovely sentiments they evoke. Many of the lyrics are relatable and I find myself applying them to my own life. That's a quality I never see today. All age groups can find something to sing about with Flicker. I'm pleasantly surprised by, what I consider, a quite solid debut album. Labeling Flicker as just pop or a Ed Sheeran album wannabe is without a doubt a mistake. Horan explores his music influences, from Fleetwood Mac to Don Henley, adapting their sound, what doesn't feel like a clumsy imitation, it feels like what it is, a young man exploring music and trying to find his own sound. I would say that Flicker is a soft rock album, but as soft rock would be described nowadays after the inevitable evolution of the genre, a new and modern way of rock. Even thought the album may not be risky in the vocal department (aside from some gems) it shows off Horan's pure and clear voice, what a consistent singer he is, and what a big control of his voice he has gained over the years gifting us with his soothing voice, some great low register verses and a beautiful rasp and falsettos that never seem overdone. I would like to recommend listening to the deluxe version of the album since it hides some treasures like the Irish folky "On my Own", the upbeat rocky "Mirrors" and the intense ballad that "The Tide" is. Horan seems to be into it for the shake of music, he demonstrates a great musical artistry, so I predict him longevity if he continues this path of constant learning and love for music. Expand

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Niall's album. This Town and Slow Hands were very different singles so I wasn't sure how his album would sound. The album was a pleasant surprise. I honestly don't think there's a single bad song on here, but it all depends on your personal taste of music. Well done Niall Horan.

For fun I popped it in my car, and all I can say is, holy cow, I was NOT expecting the kind of stripped-down acoustic sound from a former boybander. You can tell this guy is really writing from the heart. The lyrics are almost painfully genuine. Feels like you're reading his diary. And I am not kidding when I say that every single one of these songs could probably have great success as a single. They're ALL catchy and memorable and well-crafted, even the slower ballads. It takes a truly gifted artist to put out an album where you can say that about every single song. I'm just really, really surprised, but in a great way. I'll be eagerly awaiting his next one. In a day and age where there's lots of basic, meaningless fluff on the radio, this is some good old-fashioned MUSIC. Expand

Niall was the 1D guy who flew under the radar, but now he soars on his own beautifully crafted melodies and thoughtful, unique lyrics that are rich with imagery and mature beyond his years. A handful of these tunes pay admirable homage to classics of 70s and 80s rock, especially the darker, more mysterious "On the Loose," the infectious and Fleetwood Mac-esque "Since We're Alone," and the absolutely showstopping "Mirrors." These rockier tunes are complimented by a selection of easy-listening, soothing yet full and charismatic melodies. Highlights are the heartbreakingly relatable "Too Much to Ask," the sweet "Fire Away" which gives off an undeniable Cat Stevens vibe, and of course the title track "Flicker," a strings-laden story of holding onto a love that's slowly burning out right before your eyes.

For reasons unknown, there's a regular version of the album that omits three of the absolute best songs, which are only featured on the Deluxe version. To enjoy this album to its fullest, consider "Flicker (Deluxe)" the only option for you. In addition to the aforementioned "Mirrors," the celebratory Irish-drinking tune "On My Own" is this album's 11 o'clock number and showcases Niall's truly fantastic vocal ability, and "The Tide" is another folk-rocky track that you'll want to blast over and over again, belting out every word.

Not a One Direction fan? Well, here's a news flash: Niall Horan ain't One Direction. He's an artist all his own with a one-of-a-kind voice and stories to tell through his music that are undoubtedly going to span generations of dedicated listeners. 10/10 for "Flicker (Deluxe)." Go get it, slide into the CD player in your car, roll down the windows, crank the volume, and rock out to a heck of a debut.

And then once I heard "Too Much To Ask" I became a full fledged Niall believer. He knows how to write a nice song that is easy to listen to and enjoyable to sing along with. As far as "Flicker" as a whole - I think the album realistically deserves a 8.5 (I rounded up and gave an 9). It's a good album. Very cohesive. It's easy to listen to and there are some really nice gems - my favorites being On the Loose, Slow Hands, Too Much to Ask, Flicker and surprisingly, though I don't care for country music, I really enjoy the duet with Maren Morris "Seeing Blind". I'm really proud of Niall and look forward to watching him grow as an artist! Expand

Really good album. I was surprised by his songwriting as we unfortunately didn't hear a lot of it in 1d. All the songs go together and provide a beautiful and human story. Niall's vocals are good and exactly what I was expecting from him, I hope we'll get a few more bold choices on that side on nh2. But an overall great autumn album. Probably one of my favourite of 2017.

A really wonderful album. Niall did such a great job on this, the songwriting is really special and it feels super personal and emotional. The deluxe edition adds an extra 3 songs that are diverse from the rest of the album and gives it so much character. Niall's voice sounds amazing and the live band is such a great touch.

I was listening to the third song when I purchased the whole album. It's a pure joy. The first track "On The Loose" has the soul of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors". It's an homage with an updated vibe that suits his vocals perfectly. Track two is "This Town". A simple and well crafted acoustic ballad about that one love that you never forget. The lyrics are straightforward and there's an honesty in the way that Horan delivers them that makes this song more than the sum of it's parts. The third track is a duet with Grammy winner Maren Morris called "Seeing Blind". It's fun and catchy with a country flare. It's SO catchy that by the end I was singing along with a smile on my face. I could definitely see some crossover potential here. Track four "Slow Hands" is a funky 80's throwback type of song with hints of country and I can't wait to groove along to it in my car. Track five's "Too Much To Ask" is about the feeling of not quite being able to move on after a big break-up that we all can relate to. Horan's vocals shine on this one and he emotes those feelings of longing and loss perfectly. Track six is "Paper Houses". It's all about working so hard on a relationship just to have it fall apart anyway. His vocals soar on the chorus and you really get a feel for what a great songwriter he is. The imagery is spot-on. Track seven's "Since We're Alone" is all about being able to pour your heart out for that one person you can trust with all your insecurities. The star of this one, for me, was Horan's beautiful falsetto. Track eight is the title track "Flicker". The songwriting and delivery is perfection. It's delicate and understated. Stunning. Track nine is "Fire Away" and it's one of the best on the album. The last track on the standard edition is "You And Me". It stays in that folky/country vein and hooked me with the first line. A great end. A quick note about the bonus tracks. 11 "On My Own" is a fun pub song sang with a large dose of Irish flare. 12. "Mirrors" I am at a loss about the decision to make this a "bonus" track and not to feature it on the actual album. It's a strong single contender and, once again, the writing and vocals shine. 13. "The Tide". The song that should have been the album closer. Overall, I found this to be an excellent first album. It's honest and doesn't try to be anything it's not. Horan's vocals and writing style are sincere and have a charm about them that's endearing and hard to resist. If this is the start, I can't wait to see what the future has in store from him. Expand

Flicker is refreshing to listen to, each track better than the last. Coming from someone who generally doesn't enjoy country music, I found myself repeatedly going back to Seeing Blind ft. Maren Morris. Another good thing about this album is it's versatility. It's a track on Flicker for everyone. There hasn't been an album this year that I have managed to listen to in its entirety, until Flicker. It starts off with On The Loose, which is was the perfect opener for Niall Horan's debut album. You also have deeply personal songs such as Flicker and Paper Houses, that manage to pull on the heart strings. Slow Hands, a classic that dominated the airwaves this summer with its sultry, rock vibe. Another personal favorite is On My Own, albeit that some lyrics are a bit comical at times but it demonstrates his Irish-roots with the folksy tone it provides. I feel that this album is genuine to who Niall Horan has always wanted to be as an artist, which is refreshing. It doesn't feel like he is forcing the audience that he always wanted to be something else while in One Direction. Flicker shows his potential as a stand-alone artist and I'm looking forward to see what he has in store down the road. Expand

This is a cohesive exploration of an often-times fragile relationship that ended in eventual dissolution. You can physically feel and hear his earnest pleas to his lover, you can hear him try to process what happened, and from a rather adult point of view. I think this is particularly clear on "Fire Away" which is about helping handle the emotional labor of your partner. I think the most striking lyrics and imagery on the album come from "The Tide" which uses the metaphor of the tide coming in to describe the anxious and fearful feeling that your relationship is on shaky ground and you know what's coming. I particularly like when Niall takes on that style - where his voice is grittier and slightly more rocky than his more folk-inspired song (This Town, Paper Houses) but each have a place in this album. His influences are clear without being carbon copies. You pick up on the Fleetwood Mac inspiration but it's reinterpreted and updated in such a way that makes it feel like a throwback in a modern way. I think Niall has room to improve going forward - perhaps varying the sound a bit (I do think there are a few too many slower, quieter songs in a row) but it's clear he has an artistic vision and knows what he wants to do, and I think that's more than half the battle for any artist. He is only going to hone his sound with time. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and leave your pre-conceived notions at the door. Give "On The Loose" a try. Give "Since We're Alone" a try. Give "On My Own" and "Mirrors" a try. And if all else fails, put "Slow Hands" on repeat. You may not enjoy the entire album, but try to deny that song. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to. Expand

Niall's voice is very strong and beautiful throughout each song. The instrumental aspect of the album was always either very beautiful and soothing, or strong and exciting. i enjoyed the lyrics from each song and that they each spoke a story that had no gimmicks behind it. Songs like Mirrors - where i heard that Niall said himself was about young women who have real struggles and him wanting to let them know that they are not alone - to songs like Fire Away - where he sings about letting his partner know that he is there and he will respect her wanting to keep her distance and that he will listen, even if he doesn't understand, because he cares - to On My Own - which was a very rocky song about enjoying his own company and simply being more than okay on his own. Each song spoke to me and got me excited in very different ways. Some like the title track of the album, Flicker, were tear-inducing. Even The Tide, which may have been masked as an up-beat song, but had lyrics of fearing a loved one leaving, caused me to cry. This album is not only beautiful, but it's true and inspiring. Flicker has by far proven to be my favorite album to date. I've grown up on so many different music categories (from rap to country to rock to pop, I've listened to it all) and i have to say, no other album has made me feel the way this one does. Horan doesn't use any gimmicks; he doesn't change his image or musical style to impress or push away from his boyband reputation. He does not follow in the footsteps of Zayn or Harry Styles (or even the other two members who are still working on their solo albums) who seemed to change completely overnight upon entering their solo careers. No, Horan sticks to his guns, and in a way, in this world where everyone tries too hard to be the next cultural hot topic, is very admirable.

This album tells a somber story of love that did not have a happy ending, which is strangely refreshing in it's soft, sometimes melancholy, sometimes vibrant, tones. Tracks like "Since We're Alone" and "Flicker" contain gorgeous vocals. "Fire Away" is, simply, the sweetest, most stripped down song of 2017. "On My Own" is certainly the most memorable song, with it's mountain-man drinking song vibes. "Slow Hands" is the poppiest song on this more folksy sounding album, and it's use prevents the album from sounding too monotonous.

A lot of the songs sound far better live, which is truly saying something, since most of the studio versions already sound so complete. The first track, "On the Loose" is a good example of a song that should be heard live first.

I believe that Horan has a good career ahead of him. There is absolutely no need to be so experimental on one's first album, and I applaud him for his honestly; not just lyrically, but musically and image-wise. As I said, Horan knows who he is and simply wants to share that in this album. If that means he's not "pushing any envelopes", why fault him?

That being said, I was surprised a few months ago when I finally heard "This Town" on the radio and thought it absolutely lovely. Then "Slow Hands" came out and again, I was surprised that this came from a member of One Direction. I have been listening to some of his live performances on his Flicker Sessions and liked enough of what I heard that I purchased his album when it came out the other day. I have never been more pleasantly surprised in my life by an artist. You can tell a lot of thought and care when into the lyrics and you can hear the influences of some of the best bands like Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles in the melodies and instruments. What easily could have been an overproduced pop/R&B album that seems to be the norm, he has gone a more honest and simple route, one that isn't influenced by cliches or recent trends that can easily become dated. I am not an easy person to please when it comes to music selections, preferring to make my own playlists with my own choices rather than relying on what others put together, but I can honestly say that I have not enjoyed an album and all the songs on it like I have "Flicker" for the longest time. While all the songs are good, there are a few for me that stand out. "On the Loose" is quite the bop, reminding me of classic Fleetwood Mac in some ways. "Seeing Blind" with Maren Morris is a lovely and lighthearted duet that has the potential to be a crossover hit with country and contemporary charts. "On My Own" has become my own personal anthem, registering with me in ways no other song has before, with a bit of an irish flair to it. This is one I can see people singing in pubs and keeping on over time. "Flicker", "Fire Away" and "You and Me" bring out a bittersweet feeling in me that I can't explain. His lyrics brilliantly paint a picture of heartache and hope for a relationship that's maybe not quite over yet. And ofcourse, his singles "This Town", "Slow Hands" and "Too Much to Ask" are great and show a range in the young singer that not many can pull off. I have seen some reviews on here, giving a low score for one reason or another, mostly as people try to compare him with Ed Sheeran or write him off because he was in a boyband, Respectfully, I must disagree wholeheartedly with those critics and ask that anyone who has not heard his album to keep an open mind. I did and I have listened to this album more times than I care to admit this past week. While he may not be the strongest vocalist in comparison to some other current male artists, his voice is very pleasant and suits the music he makes as well as evokes emotions that other artists can't. He has grown up alot since being a "boybander" and I look forward to hearing more from him in the future. Expand

I'm encouraging so many people to look beyond the fact that the artist is an ex-boyband member and give this album a shot like I did. Bravo, bravo, bravo. My ears, my heart, and my soul are so thankful for this album. Expand

On the Loose- One of my favorite tracks; Niall warns others about a woman who enjoys leading lovers on and the attention she receives from it. He keeps the lyrics respectful and seems to have a certain level of admiration for her. This is one of those songs that has you nodding along without you even noticing. Perfect opening track. 9/10

This Town- An acoustic driven track, Niall sings about the love he still has for a childhood lover. While the song is sweet enough, it lacks a spark. Since Niall’s vocals appear to be at the spotlight for this track, it’d have been better if he played with some of the words or sung with a bit more passion. Overall, the song is pleasant, but it doesn’t leave an impact. 7/10

Seeing Blind- A collaboration with country-artist Maren Morris, she and Niall sing about being surprised that someone who appeared to be out of their league is showing interest to them. The lyrics are simple yet sweet and their voices fit perfectly alongside each others. Their emotion is definitely what makes this song enjoyable and lively. 8.5/10

Slow Hands- A surprising hit, Niall puts a twist on the typical club one night stand. This time it’s the woman who is making the first move, telling him they should “take this back to [her] place.” The lyrics aren’t anything special but alongside the infectious beat, they do quite well. 9/10

Too Much To Ask- A heartbreaking post-breakup ballad, Niall] sings about hoping his lost love will return to him. You can hear the passion and hope he still has in his voice and it’s definitely a song that has you swaying along. 8.5/10

Paper Houses- Probably my favorite track from the whole album; Nialls sings about a relationship that from the very beginning was weak and set to not work out and it did just that. I’ve read some reviews who had a large distaste for the lyrics but personally I love the imagery. Also, how the drums break into the music is absolutely beautiful and captures my attention right away. The music production plus the passion he sings with makes this song come alive and feel like a journey, it makes you feel his pain. 10/10

Since We’re Alone- Yet another one of my favorite tracks; Niall is aware of this woman’s problems and he makes it clear that he has no bad intentions; he reassures her that he is there to help her. With the aid of the background vocals and Niall’s sweet tone, this song becomes one you listen to while your driving in your car at night with the windows down. 10/10

Flicker- The title track of the album, it certainly did not disappoint. Niall sings about a failing relationship; he is clinging onto the last bit of hope they have left even though they both know that their relationship us coming to an end. I remember Niall saying that this track could have been easily under-produced or easily over-produced so he made sure the producers treated it with care and I feel as if he achieved what he was aiming for. It’s a very delicate yet grand song. You can see the desperation he has in the lyrics and overall it’s a beautiful and honest song. 10/10

Fire Away- Niall is letting his lover know that they can share their problems with him, even though he might not understand them, he’ll try to help. His sweet vocals create a calming tone throughout the song and the toned down music doesn’t overpower the simplicity of the song. It’s a nice song to have playing in the background when you want to get some work done or you’re feeling stressed. 8/10

You & Me- Niall reassures his lover that even though they might be overcoming problems, that everything will be okay at the end. This track may be one of my favorites simply because of the chorus, both the lyrics and the way he delivers it shows a sort of passion that automatically captures my attention. 8.5/10

On My Own- A let-loose type of song, Niall sings about not wanting to be in a relationship and rather preferring being on his own. While I didn’t enjoy it at first listen, experiencing energy he has when he performs it really made it grow on me. 8/10

Mirrors- Another one of my favorites; Niall sings about a woman who’s lonely and struggling with problems. I’m so disappointed with the fact that this song isn’t part of the standard edition. I feel as if this is what most critics were looking for in the standard version and while I enjoyed all of the standard tracks, I also believe it lacked a bit of color that this song could have helped deliver. 10/10

The Tide- Possibly my second top favorite track; Niall uses “the tide” to represent something that is pulling him and his lover’s relationship apart. He desperately warns them that it’s coming. I really love the symbolism in the lyrics and the passion he delivers throughout the song. My only small complaint is that this feels like an opening track rather than a closing one. 10/10

Incredible album. Has the right mixture of up-tempo and ballads, it really is great for a road trip or night time driving. It does get a bit sad, however you can really feel the emotion. Good job Niall.

I really love this album. The vibe is relaxed and so soothing. I fell in love with On the Loose when I saw a live recording of it over the summer and it's turned out to be my fave on the album, along with Since We're Alone and Fire Away, and the rest of the songs following closely behind. There's not one song on there that I don't like.

Flicker's one of those albums that you put on repeat on a gloomy day and let it soothe you. Of course it's not perfect, but who is? And why would you expect him to be?
Because of the whole 1D thing people tend to forget how young he is, and that this is his first solo album. If you take that into account, it's a pretty damn great debut. Well done, Nialler!

i love Niall's album. I can imagine listening to his album while hanging out, talking about everything and anything, laughing our arse off, crying our eyes out and sipping Irish coffees with my Gals. That's the vibe I'm getting from his album.

When I first heard "This Town", I was like... "Cool song. Something to look forward to of Niall." And he didn't disappoint me with his debut album. It's brilliantly created and has a lot of very strong points. There are some generic-like songs which are easy to forget to be honest (including the filtered Slow Hands. No offense meant for Slow Hands jammers. Lol). Over-all, it is a must-buyWhen I first heard "This Town", I was like... "Cool song. Something to look forward to of Niall." SONGS TO PONDER: Flicker, This Town, Seeing Blind, and Paper Houses. Definitely a 5 out of 5.

I love Niall but I’m not a fan of this album. There’s some good songs but it’s too similar to 1Ds FOUR or music in general and I don’t like that album either.

This Town: A gentle and thoughtful song (compared to most pop musicians at least.) There are nice vocal dynamics in the song (especially during the chorus) and it's something that I might "come back" to listening to. The cheesiness is present, but it's sincere for the most part. (9/10)
Seeing Blind: Production is a tad bit too clean on this one, the vocals are good for the most part but the song is lacking something lyrically for me to latch on to and there isn't much chemistry in my opinion. (6/10)
Slow Hands: The cut-up nature of the vocals and instrumentals benefit the song and make it sound somewhat unique when compared to the more cleaner and sleeker versions of "this song" considering the fact that it has essentially been done a thousand times. (8/10)
Too Much to Ask: Doesn't really flow as a follow-up to Slow Hands, it is still a solid track nonetheless for the most part. I do slightly despise the piano at the beginning considering the extremely generic nature of the song and "tell me everything that you regret" has a weird jump. Drumming's pretty good though. (7/10)
*At this point I realized that I was being rather soft, so I'm going to be more random with my scoring based on my first impressions of the songs*
Paper Houses: The vocals are often repetitive but there is a background instrumental that is pretty sweet, can't quite figure out what it is though... some organ sort of instrument. The chorus is fine for the most part but this song is forgettable for the most part. (5/10)
Since We're Alone: I actually really liked the intro of this one. Although it certainly sounds like a country song, the cheesy country vocals are instead being sung by Niall Horan. Some pretty cool background vocal effects too. (8/10)
Flicker: Well, the verses are boring and weirdly delivered, but the chorus does bring a good amount of passion to the song. The song never builds which would be fine if it didn't essentially stay the same the whole time. (6/10)
Fire Away: The vocals are more smoothly delivered than the prior tracks, with a pattern that I can actually appreciate, however, the drumming and beat of these songs is starting to sound repetitive because nearly all of these songs are around the same pace and tempo. As a song though, this is pretty good, it simply suffers based on circumstance. (7/10)
You and Me: As the conclusion to this album, this song was extremely underwhelming and is probably the most forgettable of the bunch with a boring country guitar-esque lick. The instrumentation is much more interesting on the chorus but... zzz... (4/10)

Final Score: 67/100 or 7/10 for Metacritic purposes

Consensus: This album can be either good or bad based on what kind of mood you're in. If you want to listen to an album with some surprising instrumentation, some flexible vocals, and with a backbone of country/pop drumming, then this should do the trick. However, if you're not in the mood to listen to an album with every song being a love song without truly insightful lyrics or particularly amazing or powerful vocals (he keeps it pretty mellow, there's really nothing to be impressed by when compared to others in this genre) then this album will probably rub you the wrong way. That's my review, so I hope that you find it to be somewhat helpful. :)

Its lack of artistic ambition or character of its own is easy to mock, but Horan may well have the last laugh.

Lyrically, Horan pushes no envelopes, sticking to earnest love plaints and poignant reminiscences for the most part, and even offering to listen to his girl’s problems in “Fire Away”.

It is hard to get overheated about something so determinedly tepid. And yet, dropped amid the frenzy of pop radio, Horan’s songs are immediately distinctive.
