Amen Dunes has developed a sound on 'Freedom' that is gentle on the ears but heavy on the heart. It tumbles through difficult topics with self-doubt and an unmatched intimacy.

My favorite album of the year so far. Full of great grooves and a lot of feeling. I can already tell this album will stay with me for years.

There is a complexity to the songs on this album that demands repeat listens. The pulse, unusual, but affecting vocals and contrasting melodies work together for a vibrant mix. It gets lumped in with psychedelic rock, but I don't think this music is so easily classified. Definitely near the top of my list this year.

"Freedom" is a decent listen with plenty to appreciate in terms of how it is structured and generally composed. It lacks truly memorable moments but equally has no real bad tracks either. It's kind of like a quirky David Gray

My favorite album of the year so far. I can feel the vulnerability in his trembling voice. Such an easy listening with beautiful melodies and, at the same time, very deep lyrics.

Amen takes an empathetic look at fatherhood ,masculinity and time giving a measured critique on how those experiences shaped him. The most immediate track "calling Paul the suffering " is the most personal looking at his neglect. The emotional centerpiece "believe " is a slow burn that rewards repeat listens. All in all an outstanding sequel to his debut. Expand

Boldest album to date, Freedom highlights "Miki Dora" and "Skipping School" grapple with masculinity and its illusions. "Satudarah" offers stoned-eye hallucinogens.

On the whole, Freedom represents a watershed moment for Damon McMahon.

Freedom is not a “challenging” listen, but choruses or hummable melodies are few; rather, the album progresses at a loping, steady pace, as if somehow delivered by natural rhythm.
