Usual RT mix of wry lyrics, dark ideas and superb playing.

Glod bless him for just keepin' on and everything. I mean, it's no worse than Fairport Convention. But if I want clever narrative, I've got Elvis Costello, and good licks are a dime a dozen. Tom Verlaine is the guitar genius we should be celebrating.

  1. Front Parlor Ballads is built from modest stuff, but the finished product is as strong as anything Thompson has recorded in the past ten years.
  2. Even when he turns down the volume, he never tones down the creative intensity.
  3. While lyrically his songs are top-drawer, Thompson's guitar prowess is also noteworthy. [13 Aug 2005]
