Change is the only constant. I know this is a different Avril from the one I fell in love with, but I'm not 15 anymore. She has grown so much over the past decade. To the older me, this is by far her best work.

Faixas como Birdie e I Fell in Love With the Devil mostra que a cantora está evoluindo bastante. This album is the real masterpiece of Avril's career. Intimate, personal, calm, profound. Dumb Blonde is the most pathetic song on the album, which does not match the rest of it. Could be discarded or taken advantage of another time. Head Above Water (Song) remains the best along with Tell Me It's Over.

This album was made to showcase Lavigne's voice - the fact that she was even able to make an album, and sound as incredible as she does (really the best vocals of her career) is an act of defiance and a huge accomplishment in itself, given her health issues. But even with that aside, this is a fantastic album that has some of the best songs of her career.

But even with that aside, this is a fantastic album that has some of the best songs of her career.

I understand, to a degree, why critics don't love it. I can see why some might say it's disjointed or lacks cohesion, but I disagree. It tells a story from start to finish, with different styles and sounds that I think make up an interesting and diverse record. It genre-hops, like her previous album, which is something I really appreciate about Avril. I don't think she has ever fully found her groove when it comes to music, which I find artistically intriguing - she's always trying something new, seeing what works for her and then moves on to something else. Sometimes the choices are unexpected or puzzling, but that means you never know what you're going to get, which I think makes Lavigne an exciting artist to follow. The jazzy/soul vibe on Tell Me It's Over and Crush suit her voice insanely well, in my opinion.

This has been fluctuating a lot, but my favourites are Crush, It Was In Me, Tell Me It's Over and Birdie. Devil is an incredible song, but as with Head Above Water, it's pretty heavy and it's not a song I think I'd listen to constantly. But when I'm feeling moody it will definitely be a go-to. In general I'd say her verses are stronger than her choruses - I love the verses of every single song (Souvenir's verses are a highlight of the album for me). A strength of Avril's has always been her melodies.

As a lifelong Avril fan, it's not often I get to be excited over new music, so I am taking full advantage. Biased as I may be, I do believe this is a very strong album that deserves more praise than it's getting from critics. Her voice is better than ever, and I'm excited to see what unexpected turns she takes in her music next.

This album is such a emotional and insprirational, of course there are a couple of songs that don't connect with the drama and the feeling of the album, but the songs like it was in me, Birdie and I feel in love with the Devil are so deep and well done. Avril's voice is so clear that you can't feel the feeling of each balad song . congrats Avril , I'd love to give you a hug.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Mas podemos podemos destacar sua evolução vocal e musical, com letras, melodias e instrumentais impecáveis, como "Birdie", "I Fell In Love With The Devil" e "it Was In Me", que possivelmente são as melhores e mais aclamadas pelos fãs.
Para finalizar, Avril realmente acertou em nos proporcionar a chance de ouvir este álbum da forma que ele é, porque é um álbum digno de uma cantora talentosa e consolidada.

This album is a mix of feelings. Half of the album is a masterpiece and the other half is completely forgettable. That’s her poppiest album so far. There are songs that remember her previous sound, like Head Above Water and It Was In Me, which has drums and guitars that you can classified as pop/rock. Gladly, she chose the right songs to be a single, what generally doesn’t happen.

There are songs that remember her previous sound, like Head Above Water and It Was In Me, which has drums and guitars that you can classified as pop/rock. Gladly, she chose the right songs to be a single, what generally doesn’t happen.

For me, the singles should be: Birdie, It Was In Me, I Fell In Love With The Devil and Head Above Water.

Head Above Water – 10/10 - it’s a catchy and amazing song. At the same time it sounds kinda gospel, it reminds her old pop/rock sound. Great first single choice, finally.

Birdie – 10/10 – my favorite song of the album. Ok, the lyrics can be a little generic, but at the same time, Avril’s songs can be no poetry, but it’s really relatable. Energetic and dramatic, as we like.

I Fell In Love With The Devil – 10/10 – a different sound for Avril but this is not a bad thing. A dark sound and really catchy.

Tell Me It’s Over – 8/10 – a totally change for Avril. It sounds more jazzy. It’s a really nice song, and it’s nice to see her doing different things, but at the same time, I wouldn’t like to see her following this style of music. And not a good choice for a second single.

Dumb Blonde – 8/10 – of course her album would have a Girlfriend 2.0, in this case, 4.0. It sounds teen, but Avril makes us like. Her solo version is also nice. It’s a song that you like but you also hate the fact that it exists. Avril, as expected, released as a single. But what I was not expecting is that she would give up of this song and released IFILWTD. I was so glad that she decided to pull off this song, because people don’t want a GF 2.0 anymore, we are kinda sick and tired of it, and so it’s Avril.

It Was In Me – 10/10 – I’m With You 2.0. One of the best songs of the album.

    Souvenir – 6/10 – a nice but forgettable song.

Crush – 8/10 – so as TMIO, it’s a jazzy sound. It doesn’t sound so original but it’s a good song.

Goddess – 5.5/10 – another forgettable song. I kinda hate this good vibes style of Avril. Like Sipping On Sunshine and **** Summer. But it’s not a bad song, but completely forgettable. Also, it’s really bugs me out that she rhymes pajamas with bananas.

Bigger Wow – 5/10 – The poppiest song of the album. It’s not a bad song, but it’s just not Avril.

Love Me Insane – 5.5/10 – A nice song to hear in the elevator.

Warrior – 8/10 - it’s kinda funny that the part that I least like is the chorus. But it’s a really nice song.

BONUS: Break It So Good – 10/10 – a bonus track that you’ll find only in youtube. I just don’t understand why Avril keeps many good songs off of the album. It’s a completely different sound, kinda remind me of Ellie Goulding. If Avril wants to keep her pop sound, she should follow this style. Maybe a little like Give You What You Like. Just in love with this song.

Overall, I always have high expectations of Avril’s work. Half of it, it’s absolutely amazing, the other half, not so much. 8/10.

    I will give a 10 just because it’s Avril.

The title track is so well done that it should receives a Grammys nomination, as you can feel her crying for help being at the lowest point of her life and her aspiration for survival while "Tell Me It's Over" gives us the soul vibe that is all new from Avril and "Dumb Blonde" - a collaboration with Nicki Minaj that embraces feminism, which is extremely necessary nowadays. Tracks like "Birdie", "It Was In Me" and "Warrior" show us her continuation to fight for life which are very near to our heart because sometimes we will have some tough moments in our life. Expand

A very beautiful and personal album. It’s very mid-tempo and basically only has two up-temp tracks ("Dumbe Blonde" & "Bigger Wow"). The album addresses Avril‘s battle with Lyme disease. This album contains two of Avril’s best ever songs. They are ‘Head Above Water’ and Even more so with ‘I Fell In Love With the Devil’, however, I can’t help but suspect she’s become slightly lazy with her career and just doesn’t have the same drive for it she used to. I don't think it's easy today to work with such courageous and experimental sounds, not at all stereotyped or fashionable. This seems to me an album that collects the best of the traditions of soft music, but also with very pronounced melodic and progressive echoes. I think an artist like this should be followed and respected not for the previous pop-rock based success, but starting from this album, so honest. songs like Head Above Water, Love Me Insane, Crush, Tell Me It's Over, I Fell In Love With The Devil, Warrior and It Was in Me represent the best of the best in pop music today. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Head Above Water" is an album that I enjoyed listening to. The ballads are mostly meaningful (significantly "I Fell In Love With The Devil") and the rest of the album is pretty decent. It actually feels like an older album if we think about the sound of others 2019's albums, but it fits Avril's style and that's what's essential. The best tracks here are those which delve into the power ballads that we know Lavigne can produce so effectively. But other than the album's self-titled lead single and It Was In Me, with soaring orchestrals and subtle keys paving the way for her lung-bursting croons, it feels much like a lost Lavigne seeking a sound that’ll just keep her afloat.

On every track, the mad-libs are paired with stylistically diverse arrangements--and invariably plodding tempos. The album’s lone sugar spike is “Dumb Blonde,” a rehashed “Girlfriend” that features a phoned-in Nicki Minaj guest verse midway through and, for some reason, a pre-chorus melody yanked from Lipps, Inc.’s “Funky Town.” In spite of everything, Head Above Water offers one brief moment where Lavigne’s emotional alchemy assumes a bolder musical form that’s properly befitting of her powerhouse vocals and enduring authenticity: the opening stunner of a title track.
