As a few critics have written, this is definitely a move back towards the superlative sound of their first album which is personally what I had been hoping for. As ever, the band cannot be faulted for their sheer ability in coming up with interesting songs, even if the last couple of albums have not been as compelling. Whilst Heartstrings is unlikely to break new ground in the way they have before, it’s a return to brooding form from a band many thought had rung out.

Heartstrings lacks the killer song that would bring Howling Bells the success they undoubtedly crave. [Jul 2014, p.109]
