While the roots of the songs remain familiar, the Polyphonic Spree inject enough psychedelic charm and whimsy into the album that, if you don't think about it too much, just might have you forgetting you're listening to seasonal jingles, and that beats the hell out of "Jingle Bell Rock" any old day of the year.

It's a delicate balancing act when a band attempts to rework Christmas music, but surprisingly, from an act known for upending expectations, Holidaydream's greatest asset rests in the Spree's restraint.

Improbably enough, the resultant record could last you winterlong. [No. 94, p.58]

The musical ideas on Holidaydream are notably original. They float with delicacy, leaving an impression like a snow angel-precious, a little sad, and bound to fade all too quickly.

It doesn't seem to have taken much of a creative shift for them to sound ridiculously Christmassy, because the Spree do that naturally anyway.

DeLaughter and company ensure that Holidaydream is not your grandparents' Yuletide record, taking a few melodic liberties here and deconstructing there, though the spirit of the songs generally remains intact.
