Humanz is a very hard, very subversive listen. Its bold. Its different, and it just sticks with you. It almost reminds me of something along the lines of Led Zepplins self-titled album. That thing was divisive as all hell when first released. Critics and audience just didn't resonate with the content. Yet overtime it became this classic within the hard-rock genre. I strangely see Gorillaz Humanz very much being much more important and impactful as the years go by.

Its just this very different, very strange, and very poppy beast that seems to try and tackle this theme of difference and individualism. The celebration, yet also tragic story, of how us humans struggle so hard to respect and treat each other as equals, and fight, attack, kill and hate for no real reason.

I do feel as if also Damon taking a seat back to let the other artists take over for different tracks is also a bonus, we get to see this different side of humanity NOT from his perspective, but the perspective of many adding to this very complicated intriguing listen. It all does add to the idea of identity of which the album tries to tackle and grasp.

I actually really **** love this album. But i can definitely see where the criticism is coming from and respect the fact that this is totally not for everybody.

It's not the best Gorillaz album, but I enjoy it a lot. The problem with this album is that almost every song in the album is hip-hop, and I really miss Damon Albarn's voice. Anyway, Let me Out and Andromeda are amazing songs.

This album requires multiple listens to come into full view. Yes, it is more incoherent than previous albums, but we live in incoherent times, and each Gorillaz album seems to capture the feeling of the times. I have slowly fallen in love with it, and have been listening to it on repeat.

Not gorrilaz best album, but it's definitely a must listen. The production on this album sounds like nothing they have done in the past, and in saying that "Humanz" is probably the most dazzling album they have ever created. I've been waiting a Gorillaz comeback since "The Fall" and this album is totally worth it. Although some people hate the album but for me, it's another "Demon Days" but there are 2 things that I don't like from the album: Heavy collaborations on all tracks and political overcharged.

Humanz is a good album, but that's it. It's not Gorillaz "most dazzling album yet", but it's still good. The reason I say this is because a number of the songs on it are nothing like Gorillaz. The beats are catchy and vibrant, guest artists all do great work, Damon nails every lyric, and because of all this, a few of them have become some of my favourites from the band. However, it's songs like Ascension, Let Me Out, Out of Body, Circle of Friendz and Sex Murder Party that all felt like too big of a departure. To me, their biggest flaw is that none of these songs has the creative energy that Gorillaz are praised for. They just seem to be going off of what's popular rather than what's actually good.

Despite all this, I think Humanz is still a good album that isn't a complete disappointment after 6 years, but still has rough edges. You should still go listen to it, as it has highlights that make it an essential. And even if you hate it, it still can't be as bad as The Fall.

It's a bit of a different album for Gorillaz from a couple standpoints. For one, it is the most inconsistently consistent album I've heard from them (let me explain). There is an overall mood that stays relatively consistent throughout the entire listen, which I would describe as dark, blown-out, harsh, dissonant, but these elements are handled in such a way that it doesn't harm the listening experience. These elements create a mood or story for the album. The other side is how each track is handled individually. On a track by track basis, most tracks are very enjoyable. My favorites are: Ascension, Saturn Barz, Strobelight, Submission, Charger, Andromeda, Busted and Blue, Carnival, Let me Out, Sex Murder Party, She's My Collar, Hallelujah Money, and The Apprentice. Most the album is very good!

The other part that makes this a different project for Gorillaz is the variation on the instrumentation. Plastic beach had a very wide range of instruments being used, while on Humanz it stays closer to electronic and hip-hop. I think it does the project a favor, the album feels like it has more of a statement to make that plastic beach did.

I keep coming back to a specific word to use for this album and it's "dark pop". It's synthy, it's energetic, it's moody, it's got a statement to make. It makes you want to get up and dance ironically while the rest of the world goes crazy. I don't think this album will be taking over Demon Days or anything like that as far as popularity, but it's exactly what I wanted from a new Gorillaz project: keep surprising us, keep making music that makes me think and giving us an experience I've never had before.

The album starts off with the Vince Staple collaboration ‘Ascension’, a 140 bpm fast drum loop with Vince rapping the chorus (‘The sky's falling, baby Drop that ass 'fore it crash’) letting the listener know with it’s dark sounds in the back that the world is somewhat ending. The track is a good introduction to the album with it’s theme but I didn’t find it to be a good track to represent Gorillaz but instead become more of a Vince Staple track.

Afterwards the track ‘Strobelite’ starts with a completely different theme and sound, a house style track with Peven Everett on vocals who fits so perfectly with Gorillaz’s style but just doesn’t have a great transition between ‘Ascension’ and the next track ‘Saturnz Bar’ featuring Popcaan with their dark themes.

Later after ‘Momentz’ with De La Soul, which would’ve been a fantastic track without that awful kick, we start to see some problems with the album on the track ‘Submission’ that features Kelela and Danny Brown. Kelela ends up taking the whole track with Danny just on the bridge which is disappointing because Danny Brown is such a unique rapper with a dark but fun style which would be the perfect fit which didn’t happen whilst Kelela’s generic lyrics and vocals take over the track.

You start to see so many missed opportunities they could of had with their collaborators like Grace Jones only singing a few lines in the back of “Charger”, barely hearing D.R.A.M in ‘Andromedia’, Anthony Hamilton’s vocals on ‘Carnival’ not fitting with the instrumental and so many empty spaces which could of had vocals on ‘Sex Murder Party’.

The deluxe edition isn’t worth getting, most of the tracks were either fillers or not as big as they should of been (‘Out of Body’, ‘Halfway To The Halfway House’) BUT the tracks ‘The Apprentice’, which features Rag’n’Bone Man, Ray BLK and Zebra Katz, and my other favourite ‘Ticker Tape’ featuring Carly Simon & Kali Uchis are worth giving a listen.

Overall this album is good, but it won’t be a classic as Demon Days and Plastic Beach was because these songs are so serious and deep with its political statement that has made me forget that the whole point of this band was that Gorillaz is a fun cartoon band.

Good: Strobelite, Ticker Tape | Least: Ascension, We Got The Power

All these tracks had a perfect instrumental for the guest artist it was accompanying such as Strobelight, which shines the light on Peven Everett's soulful R&B voice. Damon's verse is fantastic but, everything else in the track falls flat and feels unfinished in a sense. On the deluxe version of the record, songs like Ticker Tape and The Apprentice are very vibrant and memorable as the others (Out Of Body & Circle Of Friendz) felt unnecessary and bland. In a show of political horrors that mixes disappointment, constant fear and reflections on modernity, Humanz synthesizes these themes and take them to the stars through intelligent Interludes and well vocalized metaphors. It's a memorable conceptual work that transports the listener to a chaotic and tragic scenario, but where there's still hope. A authentic political album.

Andromeda has been stuck in my head like an enigma for a month now with D.R.A.M's soothing vocals and bouncing bass. Benjamin Clementine delivers an absolutely chilling performance in the protest song "Hallelujah Money" with topical poetry summarizing Drumpf's rise in power. I've heard criticism against the Gorillaz asserting a political view in their music but they have been political in 3 of their previous 4 albums. Gorillaz, the first self titled album, was a project to go against the grain of the music industry by removing the artist to purely showcase the art. Demon Days was a response to 9-11 and the Bush presidency. Plastic Beach was directly about pollution and capitalism. The theme in Humanz is Black Lives Matter and how toxic a Drumpf presidency will be. Another criticism I hear from this album is that the main characters took a back seat to the guest stars but that's exactly the point. It's not about the cartoons this time around... it's about the Humanz. Damon Albarn used his agency in the music industry to highlight black artists and co-produced the album with Twilite Tone who explained the tone of the production: "we chose not to use any analog or any samples, we chose to deal only with electronic instruments and tried to do something modern. Trying to do something new. Not futuristic and not nostalgic. Something RIGHT HERE! NOW! So I believe when you embark on that journey you have the possibility and potential to create something timeless" That was said during an interview at Hot 97... He also mentioned that the mantra they maintained while working on every song was "pain, joy, and urgency". TL;DR Humanz is a party album for the foreseeable doom that's just around the corner and I'm in love with it! Expand

My biggest complaint is, like others, it doesn't feel like a Gorillaz record. Yeah, there's a few bits in there that do. (Songs in particular: Let Me Out feels like a spiritual successor to Clint Eastwood, though not as good, it's probably my favorite song on the record. Charger and Strobelite feel like Gorillaz songs. And Saturnz Barz is good enough to be up there as well.)
But a lot of the songs feels like the B-Sides record and The Fall, more like experiments than actual songs.
While it doesn't feel like a Gorillaz record, I did enjoy it enough that I'll listen to it again and often, more so than Plastic Beach and The Falls, and at this point I'm not sure anything they release will ever be as good as Demon Days.

There’s no lack of ambition or experimentation, but Gorillaz don’t make anything substantial of it due to the lack of pace or consistency, and while sounding unique the music is only best applied to very specific atmospheres. My Score: 115/180 (Good) = 6.4/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've been a fan of Gorillaz since I was little. I really enjoyed the last album Plastic Beach. It had some great hits. 7 years I waited so I'm a huge fan. I preordered this thinking it would be good like I had huge hopes seeing all the Youtube videos and everything. Listening to the album today sadly I feel Albarns lost the plot on some of the tracks. Albarn is hardly in this album as a lot of his guests turn out to be the lead singers while Albarn has little background cameos. I think the album suffers from this. I think it was a case of way too many people in this. I don't understand the interludes or what they mean and I don't understand why Ben Mendelsohn narrates. I really enjoy the main singles they released and songs like 'Busted and Blue' where Damon is controlling the show. To sum it up some of the songs are disappointing and it's sad that they don't sound like Gorillaz anymore. Expand

All gorillaz albums usually have that charm, that weird vibe to them that perfectly coincides with the characters of the band. This album does not have that charm. When I listen to it I don't hear Murdoc, 2D, Noodle, and Russell, I hear collaborators. Gorillaz has collaborated in the past and it's been great, but this doesn't feel like a collab between gorillaz and the other artists, it just feels like a song from that artist with some synths in the back. I don't think this album is all bad, songs like busted and blue really feel like gorillaz, but most of the album doesn't. Expand

The problem with Humanz is what originally made Gorillaz great in the first place. This was always an experiment; a mishmash of elecrto-punk-hiphop and anything else you could fit into a grinder. Fans of the first few albums were fans based on which part of the mishmash they enjoyed. Me? Fans of the first few albums were fans based on which part of the mishmash they enjoyed. Me? I found songs like Punk, White Light, 19-2000, M1 A1, O Green World, Feel Good Inc., Melancholy Hill and of course Clint Eastwood to be my entry into loving what Damon was doing with music. And of course there were songs I didn't like so much, if at all. But that was the beauty of The Gorillaz. It was a little like what Hugh Hefner did with the Playboy Penthouse variety show in that it was a party of unexpected guests who wouldn't normally hang together if it weren't for Hugh. So really I can't blame anyone for liking this new album. Each song is thoughtfully put together. The only problem is most of the songs are the types of those "other" Gorillaz songs I didn't care for, only this time I straight up can't stand them. Strobelite is the perfect example. Peven Everett's vocals and tempo is reminiscent of all the cheesy 90's synth rock put into one. It's not fun retro...it's the kind that makes me cringe. Usually Damon's vocal injections are a fun, cool interlude to big beat hooks. But not this time. Sex Murder Party is full of lazy beats and lazy lyrics, and by the time Damon weighs in he just sounds, well, lazy. Like he's tired of the whole thing. I will say a few starshine's did pop out (to coin another song I loved back in the old Gorillaz days). De La Soul's Momentz had that quirk to it that was fun and a perfect union between both parties. Charger was another moment the made me smile, with its electric riff pushing the Cha-charger all the way through. I think that's my biggest takeaway. This album isn't fun. I'm sure I'll find more to like, but that's about all that's in the cage right now. The rest is just a lot of uninspired R&B with nothing that is remotely memorable or something I haven't heard before. Damon should have followed his own Interlude: The Non-Conformist Oath, "I promise to be different. I promise to be unique." Expand

I'll give some backstory to why I think this. So I have been a Gorillaz fan for a LONG time, and I've been waiting for this album for years. I feel cheated. All the years waiting for a new Gorillaz album, and it's more like a Damon Albarn solo project and he brought all his friends to sing for him. A lot of people will make the semi-valid claim of "Well you shouldn't expect their sound to not change". That's not what this is really about. It's mostly that there's no Gorillaz here, you know? It's not made like the members of the band made the music. Like I said before there's not really any singing from Albarn (or 2D).

I do have an actual review. I think the political lyrics ( while not particularly good) are nice. The instrumentals are alright and most of the featured artist aren't all that bad. Some critics have likened it to Drake's 'More Life' in structure, with it being a similarly disjointed "playlist". I don't really mind it. It's not a bad or good attribute.

It's a case of unfulfilled promises. I was promised a Gorillaz album, but that I did not get. I think if you didn't go through the new album hype-cycle then you should be able to like the album more than I do. It's a decent electronica album.

Its pointless interludes do nothing at all; they dont even try to bump up the album run time as the interlude 'Elevator going up' is four seconds long, has no instrumental and only has one meaningless line of vocals saying 'elevator going up'. I wouldn't say it's horrible but it sounds nothing like Gorillaz. I don't really like the choice of vocalists here (which is new compared to all their previous stuffs) even De La Soul sounds a bit unrecognizable through lame vocoders. It would be fun to listen to the instrumental version of the songs.

I'd be able to turn on a random playlist and be able to pick out any Gorillaz song that was on it because of their distinct flavor. This album detracts from that feeling, that taste with most of the songs. Now hear me out, most of the songs have a great sound to them, especially the ones released before the album was, Saturnz Barz and Andromeda had that taste but most of the others just felt empty in comparison and sort of lazy. Now, I can understand songs not being my taste, but with Gorillaz I have enjoyed almost every other song they have ever put out, but this album I only can truly enjoy half of the tracks, and I dread the day that these songs are on all of my Gorillaz playlists.

TLDR: Collection of good different songs, but as a Gorillaz album, falls short in keeping the Gorillaz feel. Should have had (feat. Gorillaz) next to most of the tracks so fans had less expectations.

On the highly anticipated Humanz, the Gorillaz first proper album since 2010's Plastic Beach, Damon Albarn's dedication to a musical challenge and emphasis on collaboration are present in full force, but a first listen to the album leaves the listener a little bit aloof. The danger that has always been present with Gorillaz albums is that with too much emphasis on experimentation and collaboration, there is the possibility of losing a solid foundation to the music that makes it a cohesive project. With a large portion of Humanz, this is precisely what happens. Many fans would argue that it is the voice of group leader Damon Albarn that is the backbone of the band, and on Humanz, it is a rare occurrence to hear his signature croon, and though there are interesting ideas here, most fall flat and really leave the listener aching for Albarn's voice. Beyond just the fact that Albarn's voice is missing on many tracks, the album's tone is confusing and does not come across as cohesive as their 2006 classic Demon Days and even the highly experimental Plastic Beach. Overall, a slight step backwards for the Gorillaz legacy, but still an enjoyable album for Gorillaz fans. I would not recommend a full listen for non-Gorillaz fans however.

An album with the theme of the world right now. It's like a party to the end of the world. YES!

After the 7 long years, they finally came back and this time, they did not break my expectations, but they already dodged them, it's a very lively and fun album, with songs whose lyrics are dark and talks about an ending that we are not very Far from living, the world is going to **** friends, and Gorillaz knew how to explain, although I have to admit that little or no participation of Damon in some songs, like many, bothered me, but still, excellent album , Such as "She's my collar", "Momentz", "Ascension", "Saturnz Barnz", "Ticker Tape", "Strobelite", "Let me out", "Busted and Blue", "Andromeda", "Hallelujah Money "(Whose lyrics are so deep and full of double meaning phrases, I did not understand why few liked it, a very good song if you want to know what Humanz will talk about) Expand

'Humanz' is an album that focuses more on the music than the virtual band members. This album may not satisfy some Gorillaz fans for it's absence of 2D's vocals, a sound that doesn't sound like 4 people made it, and choices of collaborators. Without having seen the cover, a casual listener could be excused for not identifying this as being released under the same band name as Gorillaz' self-titled debut, which remains their most genuine-sounding release. Not that this should be taken as a serious criticism, since Gorillaz isn't a genuine band. Humanz is much more in line with Demon Days, at least in spirit, though with a significantly updated sound. In short, it's a party record, and a well-assembled one, which should please most long-time fans and new listeners alike, as long as that's for what they're looking. Expand

The long almost seven year wait for a fourth album by the genre smashing Gorillaz is finally over. The album has some great well put together and catchy songs with a new R&B, rap and pop feel

Let me start off by saying I'm just talking about the base album, NOT the deluxe tracks.
Anyways, this album has some amazing tracks on it. Busted and blue is lovely, Andromeda is gorgeous and slow, Ascension and Let Me Out are some surprisingly intense rap tracks, but there's something about this album I can't quite dig. Whether it be the annoying amount of interludes that are very short

Busted and blue is lovely, Andromeda is gorgeous and slow, Ascension and Let Me Out are some surprisingly intense rap tracks, but there's something about this album I can't quite dig. Whether it be the annoying amount of interludes that are very short and could easily just be stuck on the beginning or end of tracks, or just removed completely, or the ungodly amount of features which sometimes hit and other times fall flat, but something is keeping me from loving this. It's much better than I remember it being when I first heard it on its initial release, so that's nice. Overall, this album has some pretty good ideas and tracks, and while a bit redundant at times, still is an enjoyable listen.

Favorite Tracks: Busted and Blue, Andromeda, Ascension, Let Me Out, Carnival

I like the album and it has a lot of solid and good songs, but after 2 years I don't come back to the album like I do with the band's other projects. The album is messy but the good songs make up for it.

Although a little all over the place and sometimes even chaotic, „HUMANZ“ stands out with some really fun tunes and shows the band doesn’t fear from stepping out of their comfort zone.

Nghe rất lạ tai và hoàn toàn độc lạ hơn so với Gorillaz từ bấy giờ. Humanz gồm những bài mà mình cho là khá experimental và mạo hiểm nhưng Damon đã làm rất rất tốt :)

Too much different songs in this one, unlike other Gorillaz albums it doesn't have a sense of connection, there's too much inconsistency in this one. Not much to go on. One of it's biggest let downs is some of the collaborators don't suit the song the feature in. Also another problem is that every song has a collaborator on it which means there's less of Damon. I love that Gorillaz are always trying to be experimental but this time it just doesn't work.

Notable tracks are: Ascension (ft. Vince Staples) Momentz (ft. De La Soul)

The lyrics on Humanz might be Gorillaz's darkest, but the album has lots of bright music.

Humanz is a giddy celebration of unity in difference, the sound of eccentrics, weirdos, outsiders and freaks partying together in defiance of convention. It is music where anything goes, as long as it’s got a groove and a heart.
