If you’re going to study O’Connor, stick with the short stories. For clever electronic pop, start anywhere but here.

This is a record that comes close to realising the vision Laufman laid out two years ago. This star is finally back on track. [Jun-Jul 2013, p.91]

He should be tired after creating an album in a voice so insularly his. That insularity can make tracks blend together some, but Laufman’s genre-collaging and quirky point of view make Id a compelling listen.

Disappointedly, the glut of sampled soundbites, from an engine starting to gurgled vocals, tend to grate, distracting from the flow of the album, which also sadly lacks a standout track of the magnitude featured on previous Wise Blood releases.

In his honest debut Id, Chris Laufman, the mind behind the joyous noise-pop project Wise Blood, nobly outlines the neurotic impulses of those of us who don’t have a seat at Miley Cyrus’s lunch table.
