It’s true that any album this laced with optimism is bound to feel slightly blinkered in the current climate – but by burying their heads in the sand, Friendly Fires prove they can be a much-needed source of release once again.

    It's an impressive return. [Sep 2019, p.111]

Inflorescent wears its heart on its sleeve in the hopes listeners find it as therapeutic as the band does. In a way, it adds to the album's charm.

This is as tropical and kaleidoscopic as Friendly Fires have ever been. It’s akin to gobbling an entire pack of Fruit Pastilles; colourful, maybe a little sickly, but you sure as hell want to experience it again.

Their creative fires are clearly burning again, even though it feels like this album had to be exorcised for them to fully ignite in the future.

There a few moments on Inflorescent where the tone changes lightly. The downbeat "Cry Wolf" still slinks along atop a funky bassline, but its minor key momentarily pivots the focus from dancing your problems away to just straight up crying about them. These mild digressions never quite cohere into anything substantial though, and for the most part it's just a lighthearted rush. Needless to say, it's an album best digested in morsels.

Friendly Fires remain knowingly cheesy and in-your-face and their Technicolor live shows will continue to thrill regardless. The worst part of ‘Inflorescent’ is that you won’t hate it; you’ll just forget you’ve even listened to it.

This is a record I really needed - unburdened of grief and anxiety, filled with dance, joy and energy. This is the soundtrack of the summerThis is a record I really needed - unburdened of grief and anxiety, filled with dance, joy and energy. This is the soundtrack of the summer and any upcoming warm day when you just wanna be in love on the dancefloor, underneath the trees and hanging lights.

The production is tight, the flow seamless, and the highs are high. Absolute standout tracks are all the singles ('Love Like Waves', 'Heaven Let Me In', 'Lack of Love'. 'Silhouettes', 'RUN THE WILD FLOWERS', 'Can't Wait Forever'), but also 'Offline' and 'Almost Midnight'.

    What a banger.

Inflorescent is probably my least favourite album from the band, as it tries to be a cool indie dance record but feels quite stitled. The realInflorescent is probably my least favourite album from the band, as it tries to be a cool indie dance record but feels quite stitled. The real culprit is the lyrics as at times they are cheesy and silly and feel written from the perspective of a tween rather than a grown man, however the production is a wonderful tropical-summer rave that saves most of the album.
