One of my favorite albums ever. Can listen to any song on the album repeatedly. Definitely an album that has to grow on you, but those always turn out to be the best ones.

such a disappointment. The music is more rocking but there are NO songs worth playing twice.

not quite as good as their old albums "grow up and blow away" and "old world underground where are you now?" but still a marvolous album!

A great pop album. Killer melodies, high energy, and pushes the envelope without breaking it. As Happyland describe the genre both bands belong to, it's "pop and little punky". Much better than Old World Undergound, and possibly as good as Grow Up and Blow Away.

Excellent Album. Its has so much more emotional expansion than their last album. While it has the traditional rock/dance songs like Monster Hospital it also has some darker, more brooding songs like Too Little Too Late. A bit pretentious at times with lyrics like 'Buy a car to drive to work; drive to work to pay for this car', though this can be ignored for the most part because Excellent Album. Live It Out marks a change in Metric's sound--this album features far more of the band as a whole, meaning there are is more guitar from Shaw, more bass from Winstead, and more amazing percussion from Scott-Key. Missing from the sound is the keyboard and synth usually performed by the front woman, Emily Haines. These changes are aren't entirely good, nor are they entirely bad. Metric's songs are known to encompass elements from many genres, most notable rock, pop, and electronic. If you're one who favors Metric's more electro-pop dance songs (think Dead Disco), then you may be in for a disappointment. If you're into more rock-centric sounds, then you should really give this album a listen. Their old sound is not so much completely forgotten as it is adapted; listen closely, and you will still find bits of the keyboards and synth of the older Metric songs. The song that deviates the most from Metric's normal sound is Too Little, Too Late. This song features simple backing music and little ornamentation, with the focus being placed on Haines' vocals and the meaning of the song itself. Other notable songs on the album are Patriarch On a Vespa, Empty (which opens the album and almost from the beginning ushers in Metric's new sound), Monster Hospital, adn Glass Ceiling. Expand

I find it quite telling (and slightly amusing) that early reviews of Live It Out have very little in common. One critics favorite track is despised by another. Live It Out is a barrage of blistering rock 'n' roll, interspersed with mild experimental elements. The album demands that you forget its predecessor, Old World Underground, and take it for what it is, since it is far more guitar driven. If you are one of the people who can't picture Metric without a smorgasboard of synths, than Live It Out will disappoint. If you can look past this, however, what's left is a satisfyingly punchy little album. It is not Metric's masterpiece, nor is it likely to top anyones best of 2005 list. What it does offer are short, unpretentious bursts of energy, determined to make you dance. In a time of year when every record strives to overwhelm listeners with profundity, Live It Out is refreshingly simple. Expand

Definitely not as interesting or impactful as "Old World Underground...", but it's gotten more enjoyable with each listen.

Emily Haines' voice is orgasmic and the rest of the band isn't too bad either. I prefer this record over Old World Underground and I give them props too because it would have been so easy for Metric to follow with a similar record what with the music's industry's infatuation with synths these days. This is a great album. Ignore the bad reviews (i.e. Pitchfork) - are these guys listening to the same album that I bought? Maybe its not as good as Broken Social Scene but that's not saying much. I think that if you don't "over think" the album and just listen to it you'll like it. The single "Monster Hospital" is a great example. My favorite album of the year. Emily Haines is an emotive, resplendent singer who knows how to perform...and the band does her justice.

My score is very straightforward. 9 out of the album's 10 tracks were amazing. Track 9, Ending Start, really fell short of the line. Other than that, this album is a true piece of genius and by far the best from Metric. I loved how the album had an edgier, more rock feel, as that's one of it's strongest points.

The album is great. It's got a good sound, and Metric has again produced an album that's both unique and easy to play over and over again. Although, for the most part, I like some of Metric's older stuff, they haven't strayed too far from their core competencies. I just hope they don't drop their unique synth sound too much more!

They're doing their thing. Metric's 2005 release isn't as layered as one might wish, nor as ambitious, but it's entertaining and aesthetically pleasing mostly.

This album is hard edge and demands you to stand up at attention and jump up and down in enjoyment. A great follow up to their 2003 masterpiece "Old World Underground...".

  1. The record may have a little less electronic slink than prior efforts, but it has a propulsive energy, even in the mid-tempo tracks, that makes the record easy to like.
  2. Metric has a hard time balancing its pop side and its experimental side, and not enough of the new record is as memorable as its simmering regret ballad "Too Little Too Late" or the frenzied retro-dance cut "Monster Hospital."
  3. The guitars are louder, the songs are a little more complex, and so the band walks a tightrope between power-pop and rawk.
