Thematically it's as strong an instrumental record as I've heard in a while, this weird glimpse at a stranger's photo album that in the end is surprisingly quite touching.

It's bold without making a big stink about it. It's personal without being solipsistic. It's a musical proof of Umberto Eco's thesis.

Props to McGuire for making an album exuding love, humbleness, and gratitude which didn't sacrifice any of his compositional complexity or overemphasize its conception. He should be proud of living with himself.

Living With Yourself is a wistful affair brimming with fondness and solemnity for the characters and stories that dot McGuire's life to now.

To say that Living With Yourself is more closely related to the better solo efforts of Michael Rother or the breezy atmospherics of the Durutti Column would be accurate (and somewhat faint) praise, but it would fall short of recognizing just how versatile McGuire makes his instrument sound.

So Living With Yourself is a lot like, well, living by yourself-comfortable, unchallenging, plenty of time to get introspective and think about things that once were.

Living With Yourself showcases McGuire's playing with minimal adornment. [Nov 2010, p.94]
