Each track seamlessly flows into the other, there is no evidence of discombobulation or disparity, despite most of the tracks belonging to different genres. Halsey wasn't playing when she said every song on Manic has its own identity. It amazes me the way that she explored a lot of themes and sounds without losing identity and cohesion. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful, Raw, Emotional, and Vulnerable are a few words to describe what Manic means to me. In Ashley, Halsey describes the struggle of being "manic" and still living through the madness of the world. In clementine, Halsey describes how she has a close circle of her family/friends and how it can be limited. In Graveyard, its an atmospheric song about how the warning signs in a relationship can feel like the butterflies. Graveyard also reflects about a toxic and almost near dangerous relationship (Halsey is referring to her past relationship with ex rapper G-Easy who cheated on her various times). In You should be sad, Halsey has described this song on her Twitter as "wanting to write a Carrie Underwood type Before he Cheats but the After he Cheats version" and reflects upon the frustration of a toxic relationship and how she's glad that her past relationship never went into something further such as possibly having children (This song also refers to her past relationship with G-Easy except Halsey changes the narrative as being glad the relationship ended doing to the things that he did as an excuse of being with her in the past). In Forever.... (is a long time), Halsey reflects upon the uncertainty of life as being major then going to minor (meaning she is reflecting upon the bright and dark sides of life, the positive and the negative). It also describes the uncertainty of a relationship and of trusting your partner and the outro will be sampled in the next song. In Dominic's Interlude, Dominic Fike is now telling Halsey's story that describes love and its different stages and how their is a bit of a lack of trust in a partner in a relationship and samples "Talk to your man, tell him he got bad news comin'" which is heard at the outro of Forever... (is a long time). In I HATE EVERYBODY, Halsey reflects upon the negative feedback she has received since the start of her career from her former friends and the media, its an optimistic song that describes to ignore the negative feedback and just hate everybody for saying it and just be your unapologetic self. In 3am, Halsey is calling all the contacts on her phone until she gets an answer and is describing how she wants a digital relationship instead of a physical one as she doesn't want to end up lonely. in Without Me, Halsey is describing how she was taken advantage of in a past relationship. Without Me reflects upon her past relationship with G-Easy who had cheated on Halsey various times. The song earned a #1 place on the Billboard Top 10 last year and maintained that position for about 28-almost 29 weeks! In Finally//beautiful stranger, its a slow "A Star is Born-esque ballad" that describes what love at first sight with beautiful stranger feels like. Halsey confirmed that she wrote this song while she was in a past relationship with ex Yungblud (who she still remains good friends with). In Alanis' Interlude, Halsey teams up with longtime music idol Alanis Morissette and the song describes Halsey's bisexuality and the difference between being in a sexual relationship with a man and being in one with a women. As we know, Halsey is very open on advocating for LGBT+ Rights. In killing boys, Halsey wants "revenge" on a past relationship but not violent revenge, peaceful revenge as she doesn't need this person anymore to feel whole. The song also describes how Women should be strong and independent after a breakup. In SUGA's Interlude, Halsey collaborates with SUGA from the K-Pop group BTS and the song describes how Halsey is near wanting it all but slightly wants a change in her creative aspect and wonders what she would do if she wanted a change from making music. In More, its a raw, vulnerable, and emotional story. Halsey has described the song as "not necessarily a love song but a love song to someone who is not in this world yet but possibly will be someday". In the past, Halsey has struggled with conceiving children due to her diagnosis of Endometriosis which is something she still struggles with to this day. In the past, Halsey has suffered three miscarriages which is very sad and details that struggle with being ready for a child yet finding out that it will not be in this world. In Still Learning, it is an Ed Sheeran esque song (which is pretty ironic since Ed is a credited writer on the song) and the song describes Halsey's journey of self love which she has achieved but still struggles with everyday no matter how easy it looks to be happy, its hard to be ok at times. In 929, Halsey tells the story behind her birthday, September 29. As we know, Halsey was born in 1994 on September 29. In the song, Halsey claims she was born on 9/29 at 9:29am which isn't true as she was born on 9/29 at 9:26am which she found out from her birth certificate. There is another track from the Target version called I'm Not Mad which describes how she isn't mad about how things turned out. Manic is a masterpiece of a story which Halsey tells exceptionally well. Expand

Secondly, this is an absolute lyrical masterpiece. Her lyrics are candid and raw, and really show her ability as a writer. Although not an excellent vocalist, Halsey does the best she can with her voice and delivers some of the most striking vocals of her career! This feels real and authentic, there is not persona. Incredibly raw and vulnerable, as art should be. Ashley has turned her truth into music for the world to hear and I am in awe of her talent, strength, and bravery.

The first track speaks for itself. The album unravelled so many chapter of ASHLEY’S life to me yet Halsey remains in the story. It is a very dynamic work of Art that speaks the truths of being a human being.

Manic is a refreshing introduction to a new chapter to Halsey and Ashley’s journey. It is an evocative masterpiece that shares the struggles that occurs in one’s head. It is not just a story of a very dynamic musician but a relatable basis of life in general.

She’s grown so much since badlands/ room93 and it shows, the album is very authentically “ashley” but also seems to feel very halsey at the same time. What i mean by that is she uses the same style of metaphors as she did in badlands but the sound is very her, which has definitely kept her fans happy.

Manic is the most personal, deep and beautiful album I’ve ever heard. Halsey put her heart and soul into it. She shows us a vulnerable side of hers. So emotional and heartbreaking, definitely worth a listen.

Um álbum sincero e cru, que consegue mostrar muito mais da vulnerabilidade da Halsey, nos revelando a pessoa que vive por trás da artista. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Far and away Halsey's best full-length album to date. Badlands was incredible, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom was meh, but Manic is in a league of its own. From song 1 to song 16, this album is by far the most personal and honest album she's ever written. Her lyrics are a deep dive into the inner workings of her mind, and the production is flawless. Amazing (and diverse) guest appearances as well as a variety of genres keep the listener from getting bored for even a second.

It's nice to hear her take a step away from her usual semi-fictional storytelling vibe to something much more personal and introspective, while still holding onto the deep and thought-provoking lyrical content we've all come to know and love from Halsey.

Her up-tempo songs are fantastic and varied, from the pop-punk vibes of 3am to the trap infused beats in Without Me, every listener is sure to find their new favorite Halsey song on this album. And her lyrical genius and amazing melodies will keep you fully engaged during the more downtempo songs like More and 929.

The album packs in a bunch of different genres which one would expect to make for a disjointed and incoherent album, but the song order, lyrics, and samples of movies and other dialogue make the songs flow into each other perfectly. These days it's very hard to find a modern album that you can play front to back without skipping a song, but Halsey has done just that with Manic.

My personal favorites from the album include: You should be sad, I Hate Everybody, 3am, Forever... (is a long time), Without Me, Graveyard, Alanis' Interlude, and More. But absolutely every song has something new and different to offer that we haven't heard from Halsey before.

Overall, this album is a masterpiece that proves pop music is still capable of innovation even though the genre has been getting stale over the years. Very refreshing, and very unique. Do not sleep on this album, you will regret it.

Manic is the best album she has ever made. It's so raw, beautiful, and poetic. It truly shows who Ashley is and I honestly prefer it over hfk or badlands. Her brain is so lovely and interesting and I'm so glad she trusts us with it. I love her so much and I'm so proud of her.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Manic is Halsey’s most personal & diverse album to date. Every track, while being very different from the others, blend together beautifully. She explores past relationships, certain stances, & even her most personal demons on tracks like “More.” Manic is hard to define under one genre, it’s like she took every major genre, threw them in a blender, & the result is Manic. As a major Halsey fan this is my favorite project to date, definitely more like Badlands than Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, but completely it’s own stand-alone album. Expand

a really cohesive album, one track interconnecting the other, shows us a musical maturity of the artist, the care in choosing each track is evident. We see versatility, the album as a whole has its very peculiar sound, something sounds like country, another sounds like rock, another alternative pop is something definitely unique, an incredible album.

Freighted by unflinching lyrics, Manic is a magnificent - and magnificently raw - pop confessional. [Apr 2020, p.110]

The real problem is that the best ideas are outvoted by frustrating ones, leaving us with little touches like the short, yelping-like sound in the second verse of More or the distorted vocals that end killing boys. There are some good moments here, but even the best of them can’t help Halsey get out of her own way.

Manic is a rich and often confounding listen, an expansive album filled to the brim with the imagined worlds Halsey’s built for herself in the real one. It’s also sincerely, indefatigably Halsey: She puts her loves and ambitions on wholly earnest display, even if it doesn’t always make for the most consistent listen.
