I think, MOTS 7 is the best album for this year because BTS made any good and meaningful songs ever. A truly incredible record. The way Persona, Shadow, and Ego sampled and reversed their intros from their first three albums is brilliant, and the way the album progresses from discussing the persona (songs persona through Dionysus) then shows the progression from the shadows to reaching a state of ego in the songs between interlude shadow and outro ego, it's truly a powerful story and anA truly incredible record. The way Persona, Shadow, and Ego sampled and reversed their intros from their first three albums is brilliant, and the way the album progresses from discussing the persona (songs persona through Dionysus) then shows the progression from the shadows to reaching a state of ego in the songs between interlude shadow and outro ego, it's truly a powerful story and an in-depth psychological analysis of human beings. I also loved how it looks back at their personal pasts, like the emotional We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal (a reference to their debut album's track We Are Bulletproof Pt 2 and the final installment of the We Are Bulletproof trilogy).
The lyricism is quite superior to previous works, particularly darkly beautiful Black Swan and Louder than Bombs. The production on the tracks is also very carefully considered, especially the anthem ON with its incorporation of a marching band and their work with local Los Angeles musicians.
I can't really think of other albums this year that put so much effort into actually telling a story, presenting a critical and psychological concept, and showcasing a variety of genres that smoothly flow from one to the next. I'm quite tired of hearing albums where it feels like I'm listening to the same song in 10 different renditions that all have the same subject matter with lacking lyrical complexity, so Map of the Soul 7 was quite refreshing and emotional. Each of the individual songs is amazing as well apart from the whole album.
The one issue I had with the album was the inclusion of the Sia assisted ON because it seemed rather out of place, but I understand the reason for their inclusion of this track was because radio refused to play their singles unless assisted by a western, English-speaking artist, and even so, they had a complete radio shutout in 2020 (until english-language Dynamite), which is rather unfortunate for the band as they seek to break the barriers of xenophobia in the western music industry.
So much variety yet connection in the subject matter. Songs showing love for fans in Boy with Luv and Make it Right, the struggles yet love of performing in Jamais Vu, feeling drunk in their own music and art with Dionysus, as well as Intro Persona are all part of the Persona section. The shadow section includes songs like Interlude Shadow, Black Swan about the fear of losing passion, Filter about society's various demands for an artist, My Time about a young boy giving up his normal life to pursue his career, and Louder Than Bombs about the desperation and devastation they feel when they hear of stories and news around the world. Then the self aware ego section concludes with ON a powerful anthem about facing and overcoming obstacles, UGH! about jobless haters who spend hours on end trying to ruin lives online, Zero O'Clock about resetting after a difficult day and striving for a new tomorrow, Inner Child about growing up and realizing you're a different person, Friends about the soulmate-friendship of two members, Moon a song about their love for the fans and how it makes them stronger, Respect a discussion of the concept of respect, We Are Bulletproof the Eternal as an appreciation for the fans who supported them every step of the way while the rest of the world pushed them down, and outro ego.
Intro Persona explores the facades of a human being and the faces we show the world, Interlude Shadow discusses the dark sides of being famous with a critical and obsessive media and personal concerns of struggle, and Outro Ego reveals the desire to learn more about the self in order to accept it, joining together the Shadow and the Persona to fully realize the true self.
Truly love the depth of this album and the enormous effort they put into it. Lyrically, conceptually, sonically, this was truly a work of art.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The album is not only a compilation of new songs but also some songs of their last release Map of the Soul Persona. These tracks together with the new 15 ones are the perfect combination, not only for story line/message purposes but also to showcase their ability to handle different music genres perfectly. Each solo track is characteristic of each member when it comes to their stories, nonetheless it’s also a change up since the genres and moods of each solo are not the “usual” or what you would normally expect for each member and their solos. When it comes to subunits you can feel the different colors and chemistry of these members singing their stories as pairs, trios or quartets. Ugh is compose by the rappers and they become the group’s front battle line when it comes to hate. The track “Respect” is the follow up of “Ugh” and is two of the three rappers (RM and Suga) That take a moment to point fingers at those who talk behind their backs and pretend to respect them as musicians just because their group is now a successful one. The two rappers repeat how saying that you respect someone has become a too easy of an action that sometimes it has lost its meaning. The singers of the group take songs like “zero o’clock” to comfort fans and talk about those hard moments in life where you are lost and don’t even know why you feel down. It’s the perfect track to talk to fans about their own down moments while trying to relate to the fans feelings. “My time” and “inner child” are introspective songs about a past-present and the two singers feelings about it. “Filter” is a harmonious masterpiece that talks about the different sides Jimin sees of him, sides he thinks others see or want from him and even the sides he desires to show and give to people, specially his fans. All the rappers solos are the perfect ways to start, reach climate and finish the album. The track “friends” showcases perfectly a friendship so strong and deep that you might feel jealous of said friendship.
Moon by the member Jin is just what you would desire of a melody, vocals and comforting lyrics. This solo is one of those that caught fans off guard since Jin is known for his beautiful, soul touching ballads and even if it’s still a calm song, it’s a more upbeat and less dramatic track than what he would normally deliver. Besides that change that shows his growth and willingness to keep on trying new things in music, Jin delivers a vocally amazing performance full of feeling and sincerity. About “louder than bombs”? One word: bop! “We are bulletproof: the eternal” it’s the contrary of what fans expected yet it’s as amazing and full filling of what a great song is suppose to be. Generally these album of full of genres and stories that connect with each other so perfectly even if they are musically so different. An amazing album that reflects who the group is, who they aspire to be and what they consider they are right now, not only in their own eyes but in the eyes of strangers, fans and even haters.

The boys had a hand in the lyrics and production of all 20 songs, which shows true artistry as many artists at their level take advantage of songwriters. The album's immensely deep lyrics add so much meaning. The dark-trap song "Black Swan" speaks on the members fear of losing their passion for music. They mention how they are scared to death of the day that the passion fades. Throughout the song, references are made to the film of the same name. An iconic quote was referred to saying how a dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing, and once when they physically die. BTS speaks on the fear of the first death. With other songs such as Interlude : Shadow and Louder Than Bombs which speak on the depression and pressure that come with fame, Map Of The Soul : 7's raw vulnerability and diversity is only deserving of a perfect 10. My favorite songs by far are the ones that are written by bts themselves. "Ugh" was a song that especially stood out to me, for one, it really showed what the rappers of this group can do - two of which seem to come from underground rap - but especially the lyrics and the subject of this song are what shook me. I recommend people to check out the video "Ugh explained by a Korean" on youtube to fully understand what amazing songwriters these guys are. And I also learned it's important to find good translations, genius really does not do them justice. After digging into this album, I will definitely listen to more by them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of their best albums. The group shows their venture into different genres successfully. The lyrics and messages in each of their songs take you on a journey and make playing the album in one go effortless. There are several songs that hooked me in and are on heavy rotation even right now but make no mistake, every song is in my go to playlist except for the ON remix. Black swan, outside of it’s beautiful choreography is so enjoyable to listen to. It has lyrics that I have found myself relating to and sing along to now. Once you delve into the lyrics, you realize they are sharing their fear of losing their love for their art, which is music. This would be akin to dying for any kind of artist. They convey their struggle of trying to survive and keep that love alive. ON is an ode to their debut and a earlier release about keeping to ones dreams. I also enjoyed the solo tracks the members did with my favorites being Shadow and my time and the group songs outside of the previously released ones are of course We are Bulletproof: The Eternal, black swan, louder than bombs and the unit song I enjoyed the most was UGH!, if you’re into a harder hype rap song, this one’s for you. The point I took off was because I feel that the remix of ON with sia was unnecessary as her voice was integrated into the song in a meaningful way. The placement of the remix also took away from the play through of the album and it did let me down as it’s the last song, this should have been We are Bulletproof: The Eternal. Overall it doesn’t take away too much from the absolute joy I get from the album, just becomes a skip. I highly recommend checking this out if you’re new to BTS. Expand

One of my favourite tracks is Black Swan which explores how an artist dies their first death when they loose their passion for their craft, a fear which the group has discussed often. There is also a beautiful MV that accompanies this track that showcases the members amazing dance skills. The album also features tracks like ON which commemorates the 7 members, 7 years together discussing their past and present. The whole album showcases amazing parallelism between their past work and present selves. A another favourite of mine is We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal, a track that for me sums up the 7 years of the group and their fans, ARMY. There is also an emotional animated MV to accompany the track, released during their 7th anniversary celebrations (Festa) which will have the tears flowing. A very cohesive and well-produced album. The song sepections were superb. I personally live the song Black Swan from this album it talked about the artist's love for music and his fear that one day that love will disappear. This is a really amazing album.

I enjoyed the stories told through black swan and each of the members's solos. A different persona with a different pov of life with a different problem and solution. It was simply refreshing. I also gotta say that i'm in love with the lyrics behind respect and ugh. Not to mention zero o'clock always makes me sad and happy at the same time it's amazing. So far honestly honestly unbiasedly 10/10. Totally recommended when you're happy, sad, angry, lost, disappointed. It's one of my top 3 albums of 2020 Expand

The fourth studio album of the Korean boy band became the best in the band's career. Perfectly selected songs under a single semantic focus of the collection. Excellent melody and depth of lyrics. English-speaking critics sometimes find it difficult to understand the message's meaning. But it is very strong and engages millions of people around the world in thinking. 10 out of 10.

"It is an impressive, exciting and moving album with slick production, accompanied by thought-provoking art (the interpretative dance performance in the “Black Swan” video, the CONNECT BTS art exhibitions), but it is so much more than a shiny pop album. It is a love letter to pain, to the shadows that live within us.

As a whole, the strong but not particularly unruly “7” is less sure-footed than “Love Yourself: Tear,” the group’s last full-length, from 2018, and the first K-pop album to debut atop the Billboard album chart.

Taut and primal, “MOTS: 7” is a kind of self-referential homage. ... Each get solo turns to shine here, their collective work is what stands out.

Persona lacked the natural fluidity and chicness of their best music. Those problems aren’t exactly mitigated here, since most of those songs appear on this album too, but within this new context, they feel like a flashback before the saga continues. Many of the new songs are better about balancing Easter eggs for day-ones with new entry points for more casual listeners.
