Nuanced, dark, funny, harrowing, but also amiable, Mark Kozelek and Desertshore is one of the more digestible and entertaining documents of what could stand as the most prolific writing period of Kozelek's already inspired career.

It's arguably his best of the calendar year, thanks to strong songs as well as the band’s sensitive accompaniment. Rather than evoke the romanticism of the road (as Sun Kil Moon did on 2003’s Ghosts of Great Highway) or the emotional detachment of touring life (as Kozelek does on every live album), Desertshore pry open his brain and soundtrack his thoughts.

The lumbering "Livingston Bramble" aside, the music is elegant and winding. [Nov 2013, p.74]

Although Desertshore do very much get pushed to the background on this record (because this is, as it’s almost always been, the Mark Kozelek show), the group proves to be a great backing group that could very well unleash even more fascinating angles to Kozelek’s songwriting down the line.

Kozelek is typically raw, grouchy and funny, and his words find meaning in the minutiae of his own behavior and the lives of others. [Nov 2013, p.109]
