What happened to Joyce Manor? It is hard to believe that this is the same band that made Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired and Never Hungover Again. The move to generic low-fi pop that started on Cody has been fully realized here. One of the year's most disappointing releases.

I love all Joyce manor albums mostly equally. I really like the power pop direction they’re going on, and I’m actually frustrated that they haven’t dropped pop punk entirely. I feel that their pop punk riffs are pandering to their past audience and make this record sound more generic.

Barry Johnson’s vocals remain huge, and riffs are still catchy, but in trying to expand their palate, their identity might just be starting to slip.

It’s a recipe for Joyce Manor at their slickest power pop yet, even as it lacks the narrative depth we’re used to.

All in all, J.M. have churned out a fun record--bouncy, catchy, melodic as fuck--but it lacks the impetus and edge of old.
