  1. The big problem is Em's dreary production, which threatens even a dazzling verse from Jay-Z.
  2. Eminem's urgent radio hit 'Lose Yourself', you already know. It's excellent.... The two other new Eminem tracks '8 Mile' and 'Rabbit Run' are on the money, too, the latter being the shortest, shoutiest thing he's ever done. Elsewhere, things get more patchy.
  3. Sure, there's a couple of tracks that fall flat - Young Zee and Obie Trice feel strained - but it all flows well, and it's all strong.
  4. Eminem contributes three new songs, all self-produced, which happen to be three of the most ferocious hip-hop songs ever recorded.
  5. This CD will sell solely on Eminem's four contributions, which include the uncommonly restrained current single 'Lose Yourself'.
  6. Features only a couple new Em ditties, but they're gems.... Better yet, most of the rest of the disc is made up of solid, original material.
  7. The top dawg MCs lend the soundtrack much more credibility than predecessors such as Menace II Society soundtrack or The Deep Cover soundtrack.

Mathers slips only when he tries to play out the movie's rags-to-riches vibe with his friends.
  9. Wisely, Slim Shady has focused on quality over quantity and delivers a trio of his best-ever tunes.
  10. A watered-down mix of big-budget tricks and studio sheen.
  11. With better production and more focus, 8 Mile could have been a hip-hop version of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Instead, it's a frustrating collection that bogs down two of the best songs of Eminem's career with a lot of interchangeable filler.

[Eminem's] three solo offerings... are the strongest cuts from a very strong album. [Jan 2003, p.84]
