  1. Unlike his two previous albums, Sheik has handed lyrical duties to playwright Steven Sater, and has chosen to expand on his abilities as a musician. The combination is a flawless one, with Sheik's subdued and thoughtful music complimenting Sater's reflective words.
  2. A rich collection of tunes that definitely will put you in the mind of [Nick] Drake--but stop one (small) step short of sheer imitation.
  3. This is Duncan Sheik at his most orchestrally, acoustically indulgent, and it's a lovely, haunting effort.
  4. When all the elements of Phantom Moon align -- as they do on a handful of songs ("Mr. Chess," "Requiescat") -- the results are mesmerizing.

At first, Moon seems a decidedly somnolent affair, but with one's feet up and headphones on, the strings suddenly shimmer, and the warm vocals soothe. [3/2/01, p.71]
  6. This is easily Sheik's strongest, and most mature record to date.

Haunting melodies, unexpected harmonies, deep feeling, and gorgeous overall effect make this album a highly impressive effort.
