This album is pretty crazy. It feels like I'm on a beach in space the entire time, the immersion isn't broken at all through track transitions. The unique time signatures and intricate guitar work of math rock is often lost on me but Palm manages to put it in to a very easily consumable and enjoyable package.

Rock Island will leave intrepid listeners feeling like they've glimpsed many shades of paradise. [Apr 2018, p.112]

There are times where the record behaves so obtusely it could be trying to shut its own audience out (example: the conflicting rhythms in Bread directly averse to a “population of people who deal in cliché”), but finding the hidden entry points is half the fun. The other half is trying not to trip up on your way in.

Disquieting but somehow quite familiar, the record contorts the warm sounds of yacht rock and island music into something primal yet alien. The end result is a sound that you’d swear has been done countless times before in the avant-rock pantheon, but in reality, its direct musical forebears are few and far between.
