i personally feel like this album is so much more then just sounds combined together, it's so perfect in so many ways, i can't even express how much i love this album. all the songs have so much feel and sense in them that it's just impossible to listen to this without crying. i loved every second of it, it's something much more then just a "another album" it's a life changing experiencei personally feel like this album is so much more then just sounds combined together, it's so perfect in so many ways, i can't even express how much i love this album. all the songs have so much feel and sense in them that it's just impossible to listen to this without crying. i loved every second of it, it's something much more then just a "another album" it's a life changing experience and i think that every human being that have access to music should listen to this at leats ten times in a row until they memorize every sound and word! with live, laugh, love thank you elizabeth harris for making me feel like i truly matter with your music. my favorite songs are; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. 9 9 (specially the last one)

To listen to grouper album is to commit to 30min or more of sonic ambience. Her more folksy days are behind her and her releases such as the shy ruins or contemplative man on a boat have set foundations for what she expresses here. Essential as a full body of work that flows so fluently.

As always Harris’s dedication to using a small spectrum of sounds to convey a wide range of emotions is noteworthy. Shade is another stunning piece of work – after all these years, Harris still makes it easier for some of us to get to know ourselves. [Oct 2021, p.48]

Shade reviews different ways Grouper has approached her work over the years, but is also a unique look at the style that has emerged as a result, even if some of the stops along the way are less polished. If Grouper is normally minimalist in her recordings and performances, Shade is like having Harris perform in your living room: it isn’t always flawless, but it is absolutely special.

Shade, Harris’ most varied release yet, feels like the broadest and most crisp view of this vista yet, with clear, starlit openings (Unclean Mind), vast ambient gaps (Ode to the Blue), and hazy nebulas (Disordered Minds) coming together to form a stargazer’s dream.
