  1. This is for all the listeners who liked Phish's good taste, eclectic nature, and Anastasio's playing, but never liked one of their albums.

These aren't profound new sounds, but Anastasio embraces proven rock formulas and makes them his own, free from the cul-de-sac jams of Phish and the expectations of fans and drifters. [30 Oct 2005]
  3. Entertainment Weekly
    75
Anastasio's crafted the loud-but-tasteful, radio-friendly songs Phish were never able to create. [4 Nov 2005, p.73]
  4. It’s unquestionable that Shine contains more than a few of the most embarrassing recorded moments of Anastasio’s career... More often than not however, Shine serves as a fine reminder that Anastasio is a pro who’s been doing the rock thing far too long to release a crap product.
  5. Rolling Stone

Shine won't win over many nondevotees, but it's also not just a series of launching pads for guitar solos. [3 Nov 2005, p.90]
  6. Blender

There's no jam-band noodling, and Anastasio's indelible head-bobbing cheer is now attached to the kidn of straightforward hooks Phish preferred to twist. [Dec 2005, p.144]
  7. Though not terrible, Trey Anastasio's latest is miles below what he's done before.

Its easy for a critic to simply do his job and comment on every aspect of an album, but what is difficult is for a critic comment on the Its easy for a critic to simply do his job and comment on every aspect of an album, but what is difficult is for a critic comment on the authors intent. This album ranks a ten with me because it isnt the words that carry you places. In fact, the only words that ever carry me anywhere are the words of outstanding lyricists like Johnny Cash, David Bowie, and a few good poets. To reject an album because there is a lack of word creativity is ignorant. I believe that by simplifying the words involved with these songs, listeners can focus more on the melodies that bring forth the true passion. I dont think what I am saying is an example of a fan not seeing the truth, ultimately its mr. Anastasio that said it best. "Come as melody", NOT come as words. Expand

I love phish's jams, and even trey's octet cd during the hiatis, but trey seems burnt out and has become a contradiction to why I love phish's jams, and even trey's octet cd during the hiatis, but trey seems burnt out and has become a contradiction to why phish broke up in the first place. Trey;s voice will always be beautiful but his guitar solos on shine are just empty with style and character. Mike gordon, please talk to trey! Expand
