Thematically, Múm return to contrasting innocence and danger.
  2. The timbre or the texture of the sounds they make is worth noting while working through Smilewound, but hardly worth returning specifically for.

They are trying too hard for precocious-ness, not enough for worn-in beauty.

Smilewound is delicate, crunchy and as beautiful as the fountainhead of music whence it came.

Smilewound traipses all over the place, sometimes tripping as it finds it’s path. But when it does, it surges with moments of delicate finesse and threatening omnission.

Smilewound requires something of an adjustment of expectations.

There's something about the sixth full-length from this Icelandic experimental electronic outfit that feels like exciting new territory--and something about it that feels like home. [No. 102, p.58]

Pared-down twinkly electronic pop with arcane instruments alloyed to laptop smarts that chills as it enchants. [Oct 2013, p.98]

It may well be Múm’s most balanced, enjoyable record yet.

It's remarkable that an album with so much fast, dynamic percussion still has such a lugubrious pace, which makes all the sharp details drift by in an indistinct mass.

Smilewound beckons and fans out, drawing the listener further and further into its own sonic world, both familiar to fans of múm’s sound and very much unlike anything that they have done previously.

There's still the odd detour into eerie atmospherics, but essentially this is electronica for people who fine The Knife hard going, with recent Kylie collaboration, Whistle, providing a final dusting of pop sugar. [Oct 2013, p.106]

The album is easily Múm's most commercial to date.

Smilewound’s gleeful, weird-pop eclecticism builds up the goodwill to cover any lull.

Smilewound finds the woolly jumpered collective coasting through another set of impressionistic glitch-pop and clockwork exotica. [Sep 2013, p.92]

Smilewound is a notably more pop effort from this hard-forecast group, and perhaps its most smoothly consumable record. [Nov-Dec 2013, p.97]
