Apr 6, 2018With 100 tracks in this boxset split into four discs, this release should only be intended for the die hard Pollard fans. Despite most tracks being mediocre, this collection contains some hidden gems and is a must have for fans most familiar with the early days of Guided by Voices.
-
A must only for the hardest of the hardcore Pollard fans, its subtitle--Failed Experiments And Trashed Aircraft--should not be ignored. It takes 17 tracks to hit a song ("Spring Tigers," from the aborted 1992 album Back To Saturn X) that sounds like a regrettable exclusion, and the consistency doesn't pick up from there.... if nothing else, it's a fine warehouse of great song titles...
-
RevolverThis sprawling set would not be the ideal introduction to Guided by Voices... but Suitcase does provide a fascinating chronicle of one man's lifelong love affair with songwriting. [#2, p.104]
-
Suitcase is crammed with classic Pollard moments-- those unique occasions where poorly-recorded, sloppily-delivered songs somehow become transcendent pop genius.... But perhaps the greatest problem with Suitcase is simply its size. At 100 songs, it's practically impossible to comprehend in one sitting.
