Jeff Parker is not only a fantastic musician, but an excellent composer as well. This is easily his masterpiece; people have called it experimental, but it doesn't sound unaccessible at all. Nu jazz at his finest.

I decided to listen to this album because I was looking for recent jazz releases and found this album mentioned in an article. I was looking for something more traditional and this one just wasn't for me, unfortunately. It was way too experimental and abstract for me.

The results are often magical, the tracks' man-versus-machine provenance never jarring, the music often utterly liquid in feel. [Apr 2020, p.95]

Suite for Max Brown may be a direct sequel to its predecessor, but it's nonetheless creative and thoughtful. It's also very accessible. Experimental music never sounded this welcoming.

What Parker tapped into on The New Breed, he blows wide open on Suite for Max Brown, a mesmerizing follow-up and informal companion piece. While his electric guitar remains a highlight, Parker builds out a fast-slashing range of ideas using dozens of other sounds and instruments, most of which he plays himself.
