Carcass have gone from being a brutal grindcore/goregrind band to kickstarting the melodic death metal movement practically single handed. While Surgical Steel has more in common Heartwork than Reek Of Putrifaction Carcass still showcase their full range of talents here. This isn't a good comeback album, this is an excellent comeback album.

I have to say that Surgical Steel is an astounding return to form for Carcass. From the opening track 1985 to the final riff of Mount of Execution this album oozes quality. There is not one part of any track that I do not like. This is not only my album of 2013 but one of my favourite albums period. I still listen to it most days over a year after release such is the quality of the songs.I have to say that Surgical Steel is an astounding return to form for Carcass. [Carcass offers] up an 11-track tour de force that's as visceral, inventive, and grotesque as Symphonies of Sickness, yet infused with the dense, machine-shop precision and chrome veneer of 21st century metalcore.

Metal may have become more extreme in Carcass' absence, but they still take 90 percent of the pack to (medical) school. [7 Sep 2013, p.51]

Surgical Steel is both muscular and accessible enough to appeal to metal fans of almost all stripes.
